Awutu Senya East: MCE Embarks on Dredging of Okrudu River to Prevent Flooding

Awutu Senya East

In a bold move to curb perennial flooding in the municipality, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Awutu Senya East, Hon. Seth Sabah Sewornoo-Banini, has initiated a major dredging project on the Okrudu River.

The project, which spans approximately 20 kilometers, also includes the decongestion of drainage inlets in flood-prone communities.

Speaking to Atinka News reporter Samuel Nyamekye Jnr., the MCE said the initiative is part of the Assembly’s broader flood prevention strategy, following recent heavy rains that led to severe flooding and the tragic loss of two lives.

Hon. Sewornoo-Banini disclosed that he is working closely with Urban Roads Engineer Evans Amofa to secure funding for the construction of concrete retaining walls along parts of the river — a more permanent solution to the recurring flood threat.

Meanwhile, the Awutu Senya East NADMO Coordinator, Mr. Nash Nyidam, said his team will soon begin removing unauthorized structures obstructing water flow in key drainage areas.

He also commended residents who have supported the ongoing dredging work, stressing that community cooperation is essential in tackling the flood challenge.

The Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly says it remains focused on protecting lives and property as the rains continue.
