The Minority Caucus in Parliament has strongly criticised what it describes as the unacceptable conduct of investigations by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), accusing the agency of abusing its powers in a recent probe involving a radio commentator.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Minority said it had learnt “with displeasure” of the manner in which the NIB handled investigations into allegations aired by Kofi Ofosu Nkansah on Sompa Radio 106.5 FM, suggesting that an individual paid money to secure a foreign scholarship.
According to the Minority, the investigations were initiated following a communiqué dated February 3, 2026, from the Secretary to the President, Mr Callistus Mahama, directing the Director-General of the NIB to investigate the allegations and submit findings.
The Caucus explained that Mr Ofosu Nkansah was invited by the NIB to assist with investigations on February 5, 2026. He reportedly honoured the invitation voluntarily and appeared at the NIB office in the company of his lawyer, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South. After the meeting, he was asked to leave without being charged.
The statement further noted that on February 9, while Mr Ofosu Nkansah was in Kumasi attending to his seriously ill father, the NIB again invited him to report to its office. He reportedly requested permission to appear on February 11 instead, citing his father’s condition, but was instructed to report earlier.
Upon presenting himself to the NIB on February 11, the Minority alleged that Mr Ofosu Nkansah was escorted by heavily armed NIB officers to his residence, where a search was conducted, after which he was returned to the Bureau’s office at Nima in Accra.
The Minority Caucus questioned the necessity of what it described as “forcible actions,” particularly given that Mr Ofosu Nkansah had been cooperative throughout the investigation.
“Our concern is the infringement of his rights,” the statement said, citing the use of armed officers to search his home without consent and his alleged forcible removal to an undisclosed location.
The Caucus called on state security agencies to conduct investigations within the bounds of the law and respect the rights of citizens, warning that abuses of power undermine public confidence in democratic institutions.
