The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, Superintendent Nanavi Solomon, has acknowledged government’s decision to increase the daily feeding allocation for inmates but says the amount remains inadequate.
Speaking in an interview on Atinka TV’s Flagship morning show with Ama Gyenfa, Superintendent Nanavi Solomon disclosed that the feeding fee for inmates has been increased from GH¢1.80 to GH¢5.00 per day.
“Inmates feeding fee has been increased from 1.80 to 5.00 but as Oliver Twist would say, we want more,” he stated.
According to him, although the increment is a significant improvement from the previous allocation, feeding inmates adequately with GH¢5 daily remains extremely difficult due to rising food prices and the high cost of living.
“Feeding an adult with 5 cedis a day is very challenging,” he added.
The Prisons Service PRO noted that authorities continue to face difficulties in providing balanced and nutritious meals for inmates within the current budgetary allocation.
His comments add to ongoing public discussions about conditions within Ghana’s correctional facilities and the need for increased investment in inmate welfare and prison administration.
