Greater Accra Zongo Caucus Calls for Two-Day Public Holiday for Eid al-Adha

The Office of the Greater Accra Zongo Caucus Coordinator has appealed to the Government of Ghana to consider declaring a two-day public holiday for Eid al-Adha in future years to allow Muslims adequate time to observe the religious festival.

In a press release issued by the office of Hon. Ismaila Ali Horoya, Coordinator of the NDC Greater Accra Zongo Caucus, the group explained that Muslims are often heavily engaged throughout the Eid celebration period with the performance of sacrificial rites and the distribution of meat to family members, neighbours, and the less privileged.

According to the statement, these religious obligations, which are prescribed in the Quran, require significant time, effort, and attention, making a single public holiday insufficient for many Muslim families.

“The office requests that the government grant an additional day to enable Muslims across the country to properly fulfill these religious obligations,” the statement noted.

The Caucus added that such a move would be warmly welcomed by the Muslim community and would demonstrate government’s recognition and respect for Ghana’s religious and cultural diversity.

The statement further emphasized that Eid al-Adha remains one of the most important celebrations in the Islamic calendar and that providing an additional holiday would help Muslims observe the festival without pressure from work and other commitments.

The appeal was signed by Hon. Ismaila Ali Horoya, Coordinator of the NDC Greater Accra Zongo Caucus.
