The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Bagbin, has called for education-sector reforms that protect vulnerable children and do not impose additional financial burdens on poor families.
He said reforms must strengthen Ghana’s basic education system while ensuring that children from disadvantaged homes have equal opportunities to access quality education.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin made the call at the 30th Annual General Conference of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) in Ho, held on the theme, “Revolutionising Education, Transforming Ghana through Innovation and Technology.”
He expressed concern about the financial difficulties facing some parents and students and called for transparency in decisions affecting educational materials and other policies.
The Speaker also commended private schools for complementing government’s efforts to expand access to quality education and equip young people with relevant skills.
Meanwhile, the First Vice-President of GNAPS, Justice King Essiel Amevor, has called for a review of the country’s grading system to ensure that students’ grades accurately reflect their performance.
He also appealed to NaSIA and the National Teaching Council to consider the peculiar challenges facing private schools in their regulation and teacher-licensing regimes.
Justice Amevor further called for efforts to address inequalities between public and private schools, noting that many parents choose private education because they are seeking quality education for their children.
