Ghana must rethink its teaching methods to accommodate pupils with different learning styles, former Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr Kwabena Bempah Tandoh, has said.
He said the country had for too long relied on memorisation, although some pupils learned better through practical activities.
“For a very long time now, we teach children to memorise. But there are some pupils who learn by practising. So when we mix these two kinds of learners, we are confusing them,” – he said.
Dr Bempah Tandoh was speaking on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie, hosted by Nana Yaw Fianko.
He urged teachers to pay greater attention to how individual pupils learn instead of concluding that those who struggle with conventional methods lack knowledge.
He also disclosed that Ghana moved from an objectives-based curriculum to a standards-based system in 2019, saying the change required teaching approaches that focused more on what learners could understand and apply.
Dr Bempah Tandoh called for education to be prioritised as a key strategy to tackle youth unemployment and strengthen Ghana’s human capital.
