The Central Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will soon take action over developments in the Gomoa West Constituency involving renowned broadcaster, Blessed Godsbrain Smart (Captain Smart), who has declared his intention to contest the parliamentary seat as he campaigns against the current MP, Richard Gyan-Mensah.
Speaking on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie hosted by Nana Yaw Fianko, the Central Regional Chairman of the NDC, Dr Richard Kofi Asiedu, said the party had taken notice of the situation and was concerned about the developments.
He, however, assured that the party would deal with the matter through its established structures and procedures.
“We have taken notice of what is happening there, and we are worried about the development. The whole nation will hear from us on our actions going forward,” he said.
Dr Asiedu stressed that the party’s structures did not permit actions that could undermine internal unity, adding that party-related issues would be handled carefully and appropriately.
According to him, the Gomoa West MP is among the best-performing legislators in the Central Region and has effectively managed the constituency.
He said the MP had maintained peace and stability in the area to such an extent that regional party executives were rarely called upon to intervene in disputes.
“Our party systems and structures do not allow such things. The Gomoa West MP is one of the best-performing MPs in the Central Region. He has managed the constituency very well and maintained peace in the area,” Dr Asiedu stated.
The NDC chairman noted that Gomoa West was not the only constituency where the party was monitoring internal developments, stressing that appropriate mechanisms existed for addressing such concerns.
“The issue will be tackled the way it should be tackled. In handling party issues, you must be careful. We have ways of dealing with party issues. It is not only Gomoa West; there are other places too,” he added.
Captain Smart’s open declaration of his intention to contest the Gomoa West parliamentary seat, despite the NDC not yet opening nominations for parliamentary primaries, has generated criticism among some party members and observers.
