GNFS Steps Up Fire Safety Education in Eastern Region

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has intensified fire safety education and inspections across the Eastern Region as part of efforts to prevent fire outbreaks and improve emergency preparedness.

The campaigns have been conducted in Akropong, Asamankese and Suhum, targeting households, businesses, public institutions and other facilities.

In Akropong, firefighters undertook door-to-door and street sensitization ahead of the Akuapem Ridge Odwira and Ohum festivities.

Residents were educated on electrical safety, proper handling of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), unattended cooking, indiscriminate burning and the correct use of fire extinguishers.

The team also encouraged residents to report fire incidents promptly to enable firefighters to respond before situations escalate.

At Asamankese, the Fire Safety Education Team completed a four-day sensitization exercise involving health facilities, religious institutions, professional associations and other public and private institutions.

The exercise focused on identifying fire risks and equipping occupants and staff with practical measures to prevent and respond to emergencies.

Meanwhile, at New Life in the Suhum Municipality, the Fire Command conducted fire safety education and inspections at shops and households.

The exercise highlighted the dangers associated with LPG use, electrical faults, combustible materials and poor housekeeping.

Residents and businesses were also educated on evacuation procedures and the need to keep exits clear at all times.

The GNFS further drew attention to the risks associated with welding and fitting operations, particularly sparks, fuel and oil, as well as overloaded electrical sockets.

The Service said the ongoing campaigns are aimed at strengthening public awareness and encouraging communities to adopt basic fire prevention measures to reduce the risk of fire outbreaks.
