The Ghana Railway Workers Union has commended the government for clearing 20 months of salary arrears owed workers of the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL).
The arrears, covering the period from October 2024 to May 2026, have brought significant relief to affected workers and their families, who had endured prolonged financial difficulties and uncertainty.
Speaking at a press conference organised to express the union’s appreciation, General Secretary of the Ghana Railway Workers Union, Mr. Benjamin Essuman, expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President, the Chief of Staff, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and other stakeholders for their roles in resolving the matter.
Mr. Essuman said the payment of the arrears meant more than a financial transaction, describing it as a restoration of hope, dignity and relief to workers who had gone through difficult times.
Mr. Essuman again plead with the government to complete negotiations and pay severance benefits to all affected railway workers as soon as possible as well as they want the government to speed up work on the additional 20-kilometre section of Takoradi- Nsuta rail lines and commissioned by the end of 2027.
The chairman of the railway workers national union Mr. Stephen Bonney on his part also thanked the president and said although they were expecting the money but they were not expecting full payment thus they government has prove he is a listening government.
The vice chairman for the Union George Bosomtwi Sam said the payment has release a burden on the workers mist importantly their time of school fees paying period, he also thanked the government.
