President John Dramani Mahama has directed security agencies to intensify investigations into recent cases of narcotic trafficking through Ghana’s ports.
The President issued the directive after chairing an urgent meeting with security chiefs on Thursday, September 17, 2026, to review the trafficking of drugs out of Ghana’s ports.
At the meeting, President Mahama received a detailed briefing on the ongoing investigations and was informed that 10 individuals are currently being held in connection with the cases.
Four of those being held are officers of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
The meeting also examined the existing security structures and systems at Ghana’s ports and borders, with participants identifying additional measures to strengthen efforts to prevent the trafficking of narcotics.
Following the briefing, President Mahama directed that an inter-agency task force be established to develop a comprehensive roadmap to address vulnerabilities in Ghana’s border security system.
The task force is expected to present the roadmap within two weeks, outlining measures to prevent the movement of narcotics through Ghana’s borders.
The directive comes as investigations into the recent trafficking cases continue, with the 10 individuals remaining in custody.
