The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Jefferson Asare Dankwa, has raised concerns about the Ghana-Columbus Nursing Partnership Programme between Ghana and the City of Columbus in the United States.
The programme seeks to strengthen nursing education and training through collaboration between the two sides.
However, Mr. Asare Dankwa says sending qualified and experienced Ghanaian nurses abroad could worsen the shortage of nurses in the country.
He says several health facilities are already struggling with inadequate nursing staff, affecting the ability to provide quality care to patients.
Mr. Asare Dankwa has also criticised the government for failing to recruit enough nurses to replace those leaving the health sector.
He is therefore calling for increased recruitment to meet Ghana’s healthcare needs before more experienced nurses are supported to work abroad.
