Miley Cyrus has opened up about her final conversation with her godmother, country music icon Dolly Parton, before her death in August at the age of 80.
Speaking to DJ and producer Zane Lowe on his Apple Music show, Cyrus became emotional as she recalled discussing her new album with Parton during their final conversation.
Cyrus said she always sent Parton her new vinyl records and had planned to send her a copy of her latest album, Bass Persuades, which was released Friday.
She described Parton as a major influence in her life and said the singer helped her understand that having a public persona did not mean losing her authentic self.
Cyrus also reflected on how Parton guided her during her years as a young star on Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana.
“She is known for the faux, the fake, the hair, the makeup, the show of it. But there’s a part of her that’s just what everyone gravitates towards, which is how real she is and how authentic she is,” Cyrus said.
The singer said Parton was among the older mentors in her life who helped pave the way for her career and whom she could turn to for advice.
“Dolly was just always right about stuff,” Cyrus said, recalling how her godmother would encourage her to return to the stage when she was going through difficult periods.
Parton became Cyrus’ godmother through her close friendship with Cyrus’ father, singer Billy Ray Cyrus.
