Don’t involve your officers in land and chieftaincy disputes- Ekourba Gyasi advises security chiefs

0

Host of Atinka FM AM Drive, Ekuorba Gyasi Simpremu, is appealing to heads of various security agencies to desist from the practice of assigning to tackle land and Chieftaincy issues in the Country.

According to him, “Our military and Police were trained to protect lives and properties and not to be used to intimidate Ghanaians in the process of settling land and Chieftaincy issues.

“It is sometimes unlawful and below the belt for our gallant security capos to be used for such businesses”he said.

He added that security personnel should desist from interfering in Chieftaincy and land disputes.

Mr. Gyasi’s comment comes after some Military men were attacked by irate residents of Dome- Faaase following their involvement in a land dispute in the area.

Some police officers from Western Regional Police Command and the Tarkwa Divisional Command accompanied by two bailiffs from Tarkwa Circuit Court went to Dompim- Pepesa Palace to execute a court order against Ohyeawora Avian Nyonwah IV, the supposed destooled chief Dompim- Pepesa.

He appealed to the government and other heads of the security agencies to stay off chieftaIncy and land disputes between families and traditional leaders.

Our Manifesto is without empty promises—Prof. Opoku-Agyemang

0

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has described the party’s manifesto as a realistic and human-centered plan that has been carefully designed to rescue the nation and address the actual needs of Ghanaians.

According to her, the NDC manifesto, which is to be launched on September 7, is without “empty promises,” but well-tailored programmes to enable the citizenry to achieve their aspirations in a progressive and prosperous nation.

Addressing the chiefs and people of Bekwai as part of her campaign tour of the Western North region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang explained that the party has taken time to hold broad consultations across the country to ensure that all issues critical to Ghanaians have been covered by the manifesto.

“Developing a manifesto is not about gathering some 10 people in a room to write a document on what they think the people need. You end up with misplaced priorities and empty promises,” she continued.

“The question is, who are you doing it for, and what are the people saying are their actual needs and wants?”.

Giving a glimpse of the manifesto programme on education, for instance, she said Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) would be enhanced with support from the $10billion  “Big Push” agenda announced by President John Mahama to fast tract infrastructure development across key sectors of the economy, when the NDC returns to power.

That, she added, would make TVET more attractive and accessible to the youth so as to address youth unemployment in a proactive manner.

The plan for enhanced TVET, she explained, feeds into the objective of upgrading polytechnics to technical universities, as was envisaged under the previous NDC administration.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang thanked the chiefs and people of the area for the warm reception she was accorded, and urged them to vote for the NDC for meaningful national development.

She also called on all well-meaning Ghanaians desirous of a productive change in governance to vote for the NDC to rescue the country from further destruction.

Witches camp: Collective efforts needed to empower inmates- Dep. Gender Minister

0

Deputy Gender Minister, Freda Prempeh, says collective efforts between stakeholders and other ministries will enhance the lives of the aged in the camp.

The Gender Ministry as part of its projects says it is set to renovate some witches camp and provide them with all amenities to make their lives better.

Speaking to host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Ekourba Gyasi, Deputy Gender Minister, Freda Prempeh said  the aged in the witches camp have refused to be reintegrated into their homes for fear of being rejected.

According to her, the Gender Ministry is poised and ready to make the camps better places for these elderly women.

The Ministry of Gender has come under serious criticism from stakeholders and civil society groups, including the Ghana Chapter of Amnesty International for not doing enough as a ministry after attacks on three elderly women in the Savannah Region who faced witchcraft allegations went viral on social media.

“ We have long term plans for the camps, but immediately, we will revamp the camp and ensure that they get all the social amenities. We realized that most of the camps were underdeveloped and without lights. We will see to it that lights and water are sent to these camps. Where there is the need to provide CHIP compounds for the camps, we will collaborate with the Ghana Health Service and Ministry of health to provide one for them. And so it’s a collective effort  and if we all collaborate with the relevant stakeholders, the lives of these women will be empowered for the better,” she added.

She noted that the ministry is also considering changing the Witches Camp name tag, adding that is has negative influence on the inmates since its inception.

Daniel Prude: New York police used 'spit hood' on man who died of asphyxiation

0

An unarmed black man died in New York state after he was hooded by police and held face down to the road for two minutes, body camera footage shows.

Daniel Prude, 41, who had mental health issues, was restrained in March by police who put a “spit hood” – a device used to stop detainees spitting or biting – on his head.

He later died of asphyxiation but his story has only now been made public.

His death was two months before the killing of George Floyd.

Mr Floyd died after a white policeman knelt on his neck for nearly eight minutes in Minnesota. Anti-racism protests broke out in the US and globally in the wake of his killing.

How did Daniel Prude die?

In a news conference on Wednesday, Mr Prude’s brother, Joe, said he called police in Rochester on 23 March as his sibling was showing acute mental health problems.

“I placed a phone call for my brother to get help, not for my brother to get lynched,” he said.

A warehouse worker from Chicago and father of five, Daniel Prude was visiting his brother at the time of his death.

Police body camera footage obtained by the family through a public records request shows Mr Prude, who had been running naked through the streets in a light snow before police arrived, lying unarmed as officers restrain him on the ground.

The video shows that Mr Prude complied immediately when officers arrived on the scene and ordered him to lie on the ground and put his hands behind his back. He can be heard saying: “Sure thing, sure thing.”

He becomes agitated, at times swearing at the officers who surround him and spitting, but he does not appear to offer any physical resistance, according to the footage.

Mr Prude told officers he was infected with coronavirus, and they placed a white “spit hood” over his head.

One officer is seen pressing down with both hands on Mr Prude’s head and saying: “Stop spitting.” https://emp.bbc.com/emp/SMPj/2.35.3/iframe.html Media captionGeorge Floyd death: What’s changed, 100 days later?

After he stops writhing and goes quiet, one officer notes: “He feels pretty cold.”

Medics try to revive him before he is carried into an ambulance. He was taken off life support a week later on 30 March.

The family’s lawyer said the reason the case was not made public earlier was that it had taken “months” for police footage to be released.

According to a post-mortem examination report seen by the Rochester-based Democrat and Chronicle newspaper, Mr Prude’s death was a homicide caused by “complications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraint”.

The report also listed PCP, a strong hallucinogenic drug, as a complication.

What has the reaction been?

In a statement, New York state’s attorney general called the death a “tragedy” and said an investigation was under way.

The officers involved have not been suspended.

Protesters gathered in the city of Rochester, New York, on Wednesday over Mr Prude’s death.

Rochester police used pepper spray and pepper balls against some demonstrators outside the Public Safety Building, according to the Democrat and Chronicle newspaper.

Several people were briefly taken into custody after entering the building, which serves as police headquarters, the local media reports say.

What are ‘spit hoods’ and why are they controversial?

“Spit hoods” are mesh fabric hoods placed over the heads of suspects. They are intended to protect officers from a detainee’s saliva.

Critics who oppose their use say they are distressing and humiliating, can cause panic in the detained person, and make it harder to notice if a prisoner is having difficulty breathing.

In recent years, they have been scrutinised as a factor in the deaths of several detainees in the US and other countries. Image copyright Getty Images Image caption Some police forces in the UK use “spit hoods”

In the UK, campaign group Liberty said that, as of February 2019, “spit hoods” were being used by at least 30 of the 43 police forces in England and Wales.

Back in 2016, UK police forces told the BBC they only used them when “proportionate, appropriate and justifiable” to protect officers. The Metropolitan Police says its medically supervised tests have found “spit hoods” present no risk to a suspect’s breathing.

What’s the background?

The death of George Floyd sparked huge protests in the US, some violent, against police brutality and racism in both the police force and society in general. Demonstrations were held in many other countries.

News of Mr Prude’s death came amid heightened tensions in the US after black man Jacob Blake was shot multiple times in the back during an arrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on 23 August, sparking days of protests in the city. Mr Blake’s father has said his son is now paralysed from the waist down – though doctors do not know if it is permanent.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden on Wednesday called for charges against police involved in Mr Blake’s shooting and that of Breonna Taylor, an African-American woman who was shot eight times by police who entered her apartment in Louisville, Kentucky on 13 March. “I think we should let the judicial system work its way,” he told a news conference in Delaware. “I do think, at a minimum, they need to be charged, the officers.”

US Attorney General William Barr dismissed accusations that black and white Americans were treated differently due to police racism.

In an interview with CNN on Wednesday, he said it was very rare for an unarmed black person to be shot by white officers.

“I think the narrative that the police are in some epidemic of shooting unarmed black men is simply a false narrative,” he said.

Ghana and Nigeria hold talks on traders, related issues

0

The Speakers of the Ghanaian Parliament and the Nigerian House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Prof. Aaron Michael Oquaye and Rt. Hon. Olufemi Gbajabiamila are in talks to find solutions to the challenges brought about as a result of Ghana’s implementation of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act 2013, Act 865.

Discussions so far have been on how the implementation of Act 865 can be implemented in a manner that will not render Nigerian traders in Ghana jobless since most of them have had their shops closed and some fines levied at them in accordance with the provisions of Act 865. Ghana’s sovereignty and national interest in the matter has been at the front burner in all the discussions held so far.

Participants in the discussions have included the twelve member delegation from Nigeria, Ghana’s Trade Minister, the Minister for National Security, the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Chief Executive Officer of the GIPC, the Chairman and Deputy Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Clerk to Parliament, and some key Parliamentary staff.

Speaker Olufemi Gbajabiamila, in his submissions at a round table discussion in Parliament on Wednesday 02/09/2020, referred to the economic, social and political ties that bind Ghana and Nigeria together and urged that the two countries to use legislative diplomacy to resolve the issues confronting them. This he said, is most appropriate, since he and Speaker Oquaye, had on previous occasions, worked together, using the same tools to resolve economic issues not only between the two countries but in the sub region.

Ghana’s trade minister Alan Kyeremanteng explained the context of the GIPC Act and its implementation and said that it was not targeted at any particular nationals and definitely not Nigerians.

He outlined ways by which the two countries can have mutual trade relations with the requisite benefits.

Speaker Oquaye while assuring Nigeria of Ghana’s good intentions also pointed out that reports on the matter may have escalated tensions and cautioned that private or commercial arrangements between individuals and organizations of the two countries should not be confused with governments’ engagements. He also encouraged the use of diplomacy in the resolutions.

Both countries are keen on finding a lasting solution to the matter.

Messi considering Barcelona stay, says father

0

Lionel Messi is considering the possibility of seeing out the final year of his Barcelona contract rather than forcing a move immediately, his father has confirmed.

Six-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi has informed the Blaugrana of his desire to leave Camp Nou after a disappointing season in 2019-20.

Barca failed to win a single trophy and were humiliated in the Champions League with an 8-2 quarter-final defeat to Bayern Munich.

Messi has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave for free at the end of each season, yet he did not immediately take up the option, leading Barca to believe they would be owed €700million for a transfer.

Initial talk of a negotiated move to Manchester City has given way to suggestions the Premier League club could only afford a free transfer, which is said to be unlikely.

And with Jorge Messi, the player’s father, in Barcelona to discuss the next step, he appears to have accepted Messi might have to remain at the club before leaving on a free in 2021.

Asked if that was a possibility, Jorge told Deportes Cuatro: “Yes.”

Of the talks with under-fire Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu, he added: “[They have been] very good.”

Messi has yet to comment publicly on his intention to leave Barca but did not show for pre-season coronavirus testing and so has not trained since last month’s shock Champions League exit.

Ajumako: “My wife buried our baby alive due to poverty” – Husband

0

Husband of the woman who buried her newborn baby alive in a bush at Ajumako Ebowkurase, a suburb of Ekwamase in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam in the Central Region has attributed his wife’s act to poverty.

A newly born baby girl was found buried  in a bush at Ajumako Ebowkurase a suburb of Ekwamase in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam in the Central Region by an unknown person.

Earlier reports suggested that cry of the baby attracted a passerby who quickly rushed into the bush and found the baby partly covered by sand.

The baby has been sent to the Abura Dunkwa Government hospital in the Central region for medical examination.

The Assembly Member of Ekwamase Electoral area, Isaac Beasie Acquah then appealed to people living in the neighbourhood to report any suspect to the police.

However, the mother of the baby has been identified and is currently assisting the Ajumako police command in its investigations.

Speaking on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Ekourba Gyasi, husband of the woman who buried her newborn baby, Wofa Yaw disclosed that his wife who was 7- month pregnant came home bleeding after news of a baby who had been dumped by an unknown mother had gone viral in the area.

He told Ekourba Gyasi that he had his own suspicion after his wife told him that she was bleeding, but couldn’t do much because answers to questions he had asked his wife were not forthcoming.

According to Wofa Yaw, he was not surprised it turned out that his wife was the culprit since they already have 7 kids and catering for all of them has been a huge burden.

“We have been married for 15 years and we have 7 children, the child my wife buried ,our daughter is our 8th child. I agree that feeding our kids has not been easy over the past years, but I do my best that they do not go hungry”, he said amidst tears.

Asked if he has any idea why his wife would want to kill their baby, Wofa Yaw noted that he is certain his wife had no intention of killing the baby since they had already agreed that this child was going to be their last baby.

Manchester United sign Van de Beek from Ajax on five-year deal

0

Manchester United have signed Donny van de Beek from Ajax on a five-year deal for a fee rising to £39m.

The midfielder moves to Old Trafford for a fee of €39m (£34.6m) – plus another €5m (£4.4m) in add-ons – and has signed a contract until June 2025 after completing a medical in the Netherlands on Monday.
The 23-year-old will travel to the UK after his country’s Nations League games against Poland (September 4) and Italy (September 7). The completion of the deal before those fixtures means he will not need to self-isolate for 14 days, the government confirmed to The Transfer Show.

Van de Beek said: “I cannot begin to explain how incredible an opportunity it is to join a club with such an amazing history. I would like to thank everyone at Ajax, I grew up there and I will always have a special bond with the club. I am now ready to take the next step in my career and perform at the highest level and there is no higher standard than Manchester United.
