Tony Miles of South Boston told Virginia Lottery officials he bought 20 tickets for the Aug. 22 Pick 4 night drawing and each ticket bore the number combination 1-9-2-9.

The tickets, purchased from Centerville Mart, matched all four numbers in the drawing and each earned Miles a $5,000 top prize — a total jackpot of $100,000.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang decries deplorable state of abondoned Asempaneye Day SHS project

0

The Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has described as financial loss to the state, abandoned projects across the country.

According to her, the situation where projects undertaken by the erstwhile NDC administration were left to rot is unacceptable.

“We have seen these structures over grown by weeds and shrubs as well as iron rods that have disappeared. We definitely have to return to this project, in which case we have to conduct a reevaluation and spend more money and all of this cannot be very helpful to us as a nation,” she said.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was speaking to media men when she made a stop over at the abandoned Day Senior High School project site at Asempaneye of the Joaboso Constituency in the Western North Region as part of her campaign tour of that part of the country.

Describing the situation as unfortunate, the NDC’s running mate said the practice of abandoning projects that have started under a particular administration impedes the nation’s progress.

“It is not as if we just cut the sod and abandoned it. We started, the foundations are done, the columns are being raised. You can all see the structures beside and behind me.” She pointed out to the journalists.

KLM and Etihad among airlines barred from Nigeria

0

Nigeria has barred airlines from a number of countries as it resumes international passenger flights on Saturday.

Ten airlines have not been allowed to operate – including Air France, KLM Royal Dutch from the Netherlands, Lufthansa from Germany, and Etihad Airways from the United Arab Emirates.

This is because Nigerians with tourist visas are not allowed entry into those countries.

Nigeria had said it would retaliate any entry ban against its citizens.

Some of the airlines are not allowed to operate in Nigeria because their own countries have yet to resume international passenger flights.

But flights from 14 airlines will be allowed to land including from British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways and Ethiopian Airlines.

Passengers will only be allowed into the country under strict conditions:

Nigeria suspended international flights in March as part of efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic. The resumption of the flights comes after a week delay due to logistical issues.

It is part of what the authorities called “reopening the economy” affected by the pandemic.

Nigeria has recorded more than 54,000 cases with just over 1,000 deaths but daily infections are beginning to decline.

NDC's manifesto is the will of the people – Prof Opoku- Agyemang

0

The vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, says it is high time the will of the people is brought to mainstream governance, hence the NDC’s People’s Manifesto.

She intimates that the times when leaders sat in Accra and drafted manifestos for the people are long gone.

“We must make sure the exact cry of the people are incorporated into policy documents to ensure the people benefit directly”.

She made this known when she took her campaign tour to Kwasiadukrom in the Bodi constituency of the Western North Region.

Addressing chiefs and people of the area, Prof Opoku-Agyemang said the NDC’s yet to be launched manifesto is a document that will address the felt needs of the people towards national development.

She pointed out that ‘The Big Push’ agenda in the manifesto, for instance, when implemented will ensure job creation for many people, adding the youth will be given hands on skills training and projects started by the NDC government, which have been abandoned by the current government, will be completed.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang specifically called on women to rally behind the John and Jane ticket especially as issues affecting women and children are on top of the NDC’s agenda.

“This is our time as women and we must take advantage of the opportunity”, she said.

Ghanaian is first woman to win Africa engineering prize

0

Technology entrepreneur Charlette N’Guessan has won this year’s Royal Academy of Engineering Africa prize for engineering innovation.

The 26-year-old, who is based in Ghana, is the first ever woman to win the prestigious prize.

Her team’s invention, Bace API, uses facial recognition and artificial intelligence to verify identities remotely, the academy said.

It takes live images or short videos recorded on phone cameras to detect whether the image is of a real person, or a photo of an existing image.

It is aimed at institutions that rely on identity verification. Two financial institutions are already using the software to verify customers’ identities, the academy said.

Ms N’Guessan won £25,000 ($33,000) for the top prize.

The winner was voted for by a live audience during a virtual awards ceremony held on Thursday where four finalists delivered presentations.

Three runners-up received £10,000 ($13,000).

They are Aisha Raheem from Nigeria – whose digital platform provides farmers with data to improve their efficiency, Dr William Wasswa from Uganda – whose low-cost digital microscope speeds up cervical cancer screening and David Tusubira from Uganda – who devised a system that manages off-grid power grids by monitoring the condition of solar arrays.

“Fifteen shortlisted Africa Prize entrepreneurs, from six countries in sub-Saharan Africa, received eight months of training and mentoring, during which they developed their business plans and learned to market their innovations,” the academy said in a statement.
