Why I was beaten by Amasaman residents – Police officer

On Sunday 5 May 2019, Sergeant Abdul Yakubu Mahama of the Police SWAT Unit came within a hair’s breadth of losing his life when he attempted to effect a lawful arrest. In broad daylight, off the main road in Krokohwe, a suburb of Amasaman in the Ga West Municipal district of Greater Accra, he was hit with sticks and stones, slapped, punched and kicked. As he sprawled on the ground, one of the assailants tried to strangle him. Luckily, two elderly women bravely intervened to save his life.
What happened to Sgt. Mahama is not an isolated case as there have been a spate of attacks on Police officers recently. This week, Ghana Police Watch TV Series takes an in – depth look at this worrying trend since an attack on our law enforcement officers is also an attack on the state as well as the cardinal principles that underpin law and order and national security.
The discussion segment of the programme is lively and insightful as the guests make recommendations to arrest the trend. Israel Laryea, one of Ghana’s leading journalists is the host and is joined by Chief Superintendent Benjamin Osei Addae of the Ghana Police Service Legal & Prosecution Department and Dr Justice Tankebe, Criminologist at Cambridge University, UK. Dr Justice Tankebe makes the point that the legitimacy of the Police is critical to our democracy and urges more public education to win the hearts and minds of the people.
The programme shows dramatic snippets of the assault video that went viral on social media. There are heart-wrenching moments as Sgt Mahama is subjected to severe beatings from a mob of over 20 attackers who clearly wanted to kill him for doing what he is legitimately empowered by the state to do on behalf of all of us.
Ghana Police Watch shows exceptional footage as Sgt Mahama narrates his ordeal at the spot he was assaulted and meets the women who saved his life for the first time after the fateful incidence. He cannot hold back his tears. There are beautiful aerial shots of Amasaman, the fast-growing outer suburb of Accra which shows why land is important here and land matters even critically so. Many land disputes are unresolved and more are being added every day.
The Amasaman District Commander, Superintendent Frederick Mensah, makes an authoritative contribution to the discussion. He was one of the first people to see Sgt Mahama with his bloodied, swollen face and dirtied uniform as he ‘miraculously’ escaped from the mob to make a report at the Amasaman Police Station.
Supt. Mensah explains what he describes as ‘land-guardism’ in sections of Amasaman and the menace of land guards. He firmly states that as per the laws of the Ghana, nobody has the right to subject anybody to beatings, no matter the alleged offence or circumstances.
Another interesting part of the programme is the discussion between senior police officers and the Krokohwe community over the assault of Sgt Mahama. The level of insecurity felt by the community is high and there is a suggestion that a police station must be sited in Amasaman. Familiarity and use of Police Emergency numbers was also recommended to ensure rapid police response to crime. It is also clear that the community needs a neighborhood watch committee.
This week’s edition of Ghana Police Watch, which is now Ghana’s most watched current affairs programme showing on multiple TV stations makes important recommendations to stop the attacks on law enforcement officers which is a threat to law and order and Ghana’s internal security.

School in Assam accepts plastic waste as school fees

Akshar Forum in Assam is a school of various charms: don’t be surprised if you find a line of students waiting outside the school, armed with bags full of plastic, or if you walk into classrooms filled with students all ages – being taught by another student. It’s just another day at Akshar Forum, a small school run in the village of Pamohi in Guwahati.
Co-founded by Parmita Sharma and Mazin Mukhtar in 2016, Akshar Forum is a school run for underprivileged students with the objective of training students to ‘earn a livelihood by being responsible to the government’. Education is far from conventional here – Akshar helps students explore their own creativity and set their own limits.
In line with their out-of-the-box way of thinking, Akshar Forum recently implemented a new policy for their students: the students now pay fees in the form of plastic waste! As the vice-president of Akshar, Mr. Priyongsu Borthakur tells Homegrown, this idea was born out Akshar Forum’s recycling program.
Six months ago, the school started collecting dry plastic waste from households in the vicinity, setting the students up to the task of collection and segregation of this plastic waste. “The idea is to train students in recognizing how to live an eco-friendly life”, says Mr. Borthakur, “the entire recycling program is carried out by the students, from start to finish.” The students would go to houses and collect the plastic waste, segregate it in school and repurpose it in different ways. Recently, Akshar replicated this model and applied it to student households – now, the school accepts nothing but dry plastic waste from students as fees. “I still remember how our classrooms would be filled with toxic fumes every time someone in the nearby areas would burn plastics.” Parmita Sarma tells Better India. “Here it was a norm to burn waste plastic to keep warm. We wanted to change that and so started to encourage our students to bring their plastic waste as school fees,”
In the village of Pamohi, many households prefer to send their children to the stone quarries instead of schools so that they can earn a few rupees a day. Akshar Forum aspires to change this. By encouraging families to offer only plastic waste as fees, Akshar seeks to encourage more students to join the school without it being a financial burden on their families. At the same time, it addresses the environmental issues of the small village, making sure that the simple exercise of recycling household plastic waste cultivates a sense of environmental awareness in the students.
Akshar forum has always been different – unlike other schools, it doesn’t believe in restricting students within the bounds of a fixed curriculum. Instead, it makes sure to focus on each students’ personal capacities and hone it. Here, students teach each other, and education for them is nothing short of a fun time. In collecting plastic waste as fees from the students, Akshar Forum is not only making education affordable, but also drawing an intersection between education and sustainability. In a small village in Assam, slowly, change is happening. And it’s here to stay.

UBA’s Africa Conversations: Leaders Emphasise Importance of History to African Development

0

African leading minds have called on Africans to be mindful of their rich history, which according to them creates the path towards the socio-cultural, economic and political development of the continent
The strong African voices which included Group Chairman, United Bank for Africa (UBA), Tony Elumelu, Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka; Professor emeritus and authority in Sahelian history, Djibril Tamsir Niane; Ghanaian Politician, Samia Nkrumah and Famous Musician, Femi Kuti spoke during the first edition of UBA’s Africa Conversations, a symposium organised by the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc at the UBA House in Lagos, as part of activities marking this year’s Africa Day celebration.
The theme of the panel session was “Africa’s History Redefined, Our Past, the Path to the Future”.
Opening the conversation, the Group Chairman, UBA, Tony Elumelu stated ‘UBA understands the past- that Africa as a continent has always been united by the struggle for identity. UBA is a symbol for the development of Africa, for the economic empowerment of our people, the Small and Medium Enterprises as well as the big corporations.
Thus, identifying with Africa and indeed Africa Day is synonymous with who we are as a bank. It presents us the opportunity to remind ourselves, the world and indeed Africa that we owe ourselves the duty of making Africa the continent of our dreams.”
Elumelu added that it is important for Africans to remember history as this will help prepare for the future. ‘Our past provides a veritable tool to fashioning the continent’s development, renaissance and economic growth’ he emphasised.
Speaking strongly on the issue, professor Wole Soyinka, who commended UBA’s initiative for opening up discussions on these pressing topics decried the growing erosion of history from the curriculum in African schools, adding that the lack of knowledge of our past makes children’s growth on the continent truncated.
“How can we cope with the modern phenomenon if we do not know the past? We should never forget the importance of history as it is not just an academic exercise,” he enthused.
Corroborating Soyinka’s position, Professor Niane opined that reminiscing about Africa’s rich history is important as there is no people without history. He said, “A lot of work has been done by Africans and we have to be happy about it. There is the need to continue the conversation about African unity.
Policies have been put in place and our democracy can only get stronger. Peace will reign and Africa will be reunited. Economic transformation is also important but it is not the only thing we should concentrate on.”
Samia Nkrumah, the daughter of Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, who commended UBA for prioritising African entrepreneurship, called for a renewed attempt at African unity, which according to her, has to be a collective effort of the people.
Nkrumah said, “As we work in our individual smaller countries, it will be easier to achieve more if we work together and complete unification can only come if we work together; we won’t go anywhere unless we use unity as a political project.’ She added.
On his part, Femi Kuti emphasised the importance of History, saying “Our children need to learn this history so that they can come up and build the continent. We need everyone – both boys and girls to work towards this vision.”
The UBA Conversations, an initiative of the Pan African financial institution, aims at aggregating discussions necessary for the growth and development of the continent. It is being held as part of the activities to mark the 2019 edition of Africa Day celebrations by the bank.
With presence in 20 African countries as well as in the United States, France and The United Kingdom, UBA’s passion for Africa’s growth is part of who they are.
The bank is set to continue conversations around these important topics that are required to galvanise the African economy with the aim of attracting the much needed support that will boost SMEs and support business growth on the continent.

VIDEO: Ghanaian Abroad threatens to beat Obinim if he misquote's the Bible again

A young Ghanaian man believed to live abroad has threatened to come down to Ghana to deal with the founder of the International God’s Way Church, Bishop Daniel Obinim, also known as ‘Angel’ Obinim the next time he misquotes the Bible.
It all started when Obinim through one of his preaching sessions quoted Exodus Chapter 2: 22-23 saying that even God told Joshua that he had forgotten something and so he was also capable of forgetting something.
However, it seemed Obinim’s preaching did not go well with the young lad as he verified the quotations and realised it was a different thing the ‘Angel’ was preaching about.
In the video, the young man read the actual verse to prove to listeners or viewers that Obinim was lying about the Bible quotations, saying that it was about the second time Obinim misquoted the bible.
He then threatened to come down to Ghana the third time Obinim repeats himself to beat him up.
Below is the video:

Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale should unite through a song – Samini

The last thing Ghanaians would expect after the fracas at last weekend’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards will be a collaboration between musicians Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale.
But, dancehall act Samini says it will be just right for the two acts to smoke the peace pipe by collaborating on a song.
He said he is ready to serve them the hook for the song if they make up their minds.
“They should give us a huge single. If they want a hook I am up for that. We can make a show out of that at the stadium,” Samini said.
Samini condemned the scuffle that ensued at the Accra International Conference Centre and appealed to Ghanaians to forgive Stonebwoy for pulling out a gun.
According to him, he knows Stonebwoy isn’t violent and Shatta Wale would not have approached Stonebwoy if he knew he had a weapon.
He said Shatta Wale’s decision to climb the stage isn’t news because he expected him to do that as Shatta Wale had done similar gestures to him some years back when they were beefing.
Going forward, Samini asked the authorities to set up a counselling session for both parties.
“Stonebwoy isn’t violent. He was pushed and I have lived with him to know that. Ghanaians should forgive him… I will also beg for Shatta Wale because it is one of the expected actions of him,” he said on Hitz FM.

This has not happened in over 100 yrs – Municipal Chief Imam, as VP Bawumia visits Konongo Zongo

0

The Municipal Chief Imam for Konongo in the Asante Akim Central Municipality has described as “very very historic,” the visit of, and worshipping with Muslim faithful, by the Vice President of the Republic, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to the Konongo Central Mosque.

Speaking on behalf of Alhaji Mahamadou Mustapha, Mr Ade Adeoye, Secretary of the Council of Zongo Chiefs in the Asante Akim Central Municipality, said such a high calibre visit to Asante Akyem Zongo “has not happened in over 100 years. Since the inception of this Zongo over hundred years ago, from Gold Coast days, through Kwame Nkrumah’s time till date, we have never been visited by either a President or a Vice President. Some of us are third and fourth generation dwellers of Asante Akim Zongo, and we have never seen this before. This is very very historic.”

Mr Adeoye was speaking at Konongo when Vice President Bawumia joined Muslim faithful to pray at the Konongo Central Mosque on Wednesday, 23rd May, 2019 as part of his nationwide Ramadan Tour. Earlier in the day, the Vice President had performed Zuhr prayers at the Ahmadiyya mosque at Asafo, Kumasi and performed Asr prayers at the Ejisu central mosque.

Describing the Asante Akim Central Zongo as the second largest in the Ashanti region, Alhaji Mustapha expressed delight that their first high profile visitor was not an ordinary person, but a brother Muslim.

“What is even more remarkable about this visit is that the visitor is not just any person, but our brother in the faith who has come to visit us. We know that you have a busy schedule, but you still found time to come and visit us. We are so delighted, and grateful for your visit” Mr Adeoye stated.

“I know that in years to come, 15, 20 years from now, people will date events like birthdays to your visit, asking each other ‘did it happen before or after Dr Bawumia visited us? Were you born at the time? How old were you? This is very historic, and we appreciate this visit.”

The Konongo Zongo Chief commended Vice President Bawumia for his constant push for zongo youth to acquire knowledge, saying it was in line with the Prophet Muhammad (SAW)’s admonition to all Muslims to seek knowledge wherever it might be. Alhaji Mustapha also had high praise for the Akufo-Addo government’s initiatives to improve lives in Zongo communities across the country, noting that it was the first time programmes and policies such as the Zongo Development Fund had been specifically targeted at the Zongo community.

On his part, Vice President Bawumia urged Muslim faithful to continue praying for the nation, especially in this holy month of Ramadan. “I also want to urge you to continue living in peace with your brothers and sisters of other faiths, as we all work together to achieve the growth and prosperity we seek for Ghana” he added.

Vice President Bawumia was accompanied by the Deputy Ashanti regional Minister, Hon Elizabeth Agyemang; National Nasara Coordinator of the NPP, Alhaji Aziz Haruna Futa; MP for Asante-Akim Central, Hon Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi; MP for Offinso South Hon Ben Abdallah Banda; the Registrar of the Pharmacy Council, Pharm (Dr) Audu Rauf; and Mr Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Digital Centre; and officials of the Zongo Development Fund.

Manya Krobo crises: Stakeholders to hold emergency meeting Friday

0

Nene Asadaho, spokesperson for Lower Manya Krobo Traditional Council has hinted of an emergency stakeholders meeting on the current power crisis in the Manya Kpongunor in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality.
Police and officials of Power Distribution Company clashed with residents of Manya Kpongunor in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality last Sunday over an alleged mass disconnection exercise being carried out by the power distributors.
Some irate youth blocked the main Kpong -Odumase road to prevent the officials of PDS from continuing the ongoing electricity disconnection exercise.
The people of Manya and Yilo Krobo have accused PDS of over billing residents of these communities.
The exercise which did not go down well with the police resulted in the firing of tear gas and the arrest of some of the youth in the process.
The people have since refused to pay the said bills citing an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) the earlier settlers of Manya Krobo signed with the Volta River Authority (VRA) when their land was taken for the construction of the Akosombo Dam by government.
Speaking to Kaakyire Ofori Ayim on Atinka AM Drive, Nene Asadaho, spokesperson for Lower Manya Krobo Traditional Council described the issue as unfortunate.
He declined to make further comments on the issue adding that the outcome of the emergency meeting on Friday will determine the next phase of the crises.
Meanwhile, Eastern regional police PRO, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh has assured the general public that the situation is under control and that it will make sure that peace and order prevails in the area.
