Hearts of Oak to purchase Mercedes Benz bus

0

Accra Hearts of Oak have distance themselves from speculations linking the club to the acquisition of a new team bus.

The club said they were surprised by pictures of a bus circulating on social media claiming to be the new bus the club had acquired to be used by the team.

But a close source to the club told Graphic Sports Online that they have not purchased any bus yet although they have intentions of replacing their old bus that was currently being used by the team.

According to the source, the delay in buying a new bus has been because the team was looking at investing in a good brand which is very expensive.

“We would buy a new bus and our target is Mercedes Benz because they are durable and can last longer unlike the Kia buses which look flashy but cannot last beyond four years,” the source said.

The source noted that the current market value of Mercedes Benz buses the club wants range between €250,000 and €280,000, “which is very expensive and that is why we are taking time to buy the best.”

The team’s current bus has been in use for a long time and has become the subject of trolling by many of the club’s opponents, but the Hearts source said they would not be forced into buying any cheap brand that would easily breakdown in the middle of the road.

“These new buses you see around are just nice but they always easily break down after a few years so what is the point in buying a bus that would breakdown in the middle of your journey.

“Imagine travelling to honour a league match and your bus breaks down, you can imagine the inconvenience to the players and we want to avoid some of these things,” the source noted.

Blood-Stained nightie found in J.B. Danquah’s room– Ken Agyapong

0

Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong has alleged that a blood stained nightie belonging to a lady was found at the scene where late MP Joseph Boakye Danquah was killed three years ago.

He made the allegations accordingly in an interview with UTV.

Mr. Agyapong claimed to have been invited to the crime scene by the Ghana Police Service (GPS).

He said at the scene, he saw a lady’s wear soaked with blood.

The MP was of the view that if the owner of the stained nightie can be found, then it would be easier to uncover who was behind the late J.B. Danquah’s murder.

It is unclear what Mr. Agyapong is trying to arrive at, especially at a time he is part of seven other persons the wife of the late MP, Ivy Heward-Mills, has sued.

Ms. Heward-Mills, who recently accused some CID officials probing her late husband’s murder case of sexually harassing her, sued Mr. Agyapong, who himself is a subject murder investigation, for accusing her of having sexual affair with investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

But in spite of the lawsuit, Mr. Agyapong said he will continue to ‘dig’ into the circumstances leading to the murder of the late New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP at East Legon in Accra.

Parliament rebukes Assin Central MP

0

Members of Parliament on Thursday voted to reprimand the Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong who was found in contempt of Parliament.

This was after he apologised in the House for some contemptuous comments he made against the House.

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong was found guilty of contempt for describing Parliament as useless and cheap.

He, however, insisted that he never used such words attributed to him to describe Parliament.

The Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Ocquaye  then led the House via voice vote to consider the options recommended in the Privileges Committee report.

Parliament on Thursday suspended sitting temporarily over a deadlock over which sanctions to hand out to Kennedy Agyapong.

The committee’s report recommended a reprimand or suspension of Kennedy Agyapong for the rest of the session of Parliament.

The deadlock was because the Majority MPs’ were divided over whether the report of the committee should be approved before they decide on a sanction for their colleague.

When they resumed sitting, Kennedy Agyapong was given the opportunity to apologise and was subsequently rebuked by the Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye.

Meanwhile, Asawase MP, Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka who dragged Mr. Agyapong before the Privileges Committee says he is disappointed with the decision of the House.

Alhaji Muntaka who is also the Minority Chief Whip wanted a stiffer punishment for the conduct of his colleague.

Policeman sentenced to death for murder

0

Kenya's High Court has sentenced a senior policeman to death for the murder of a detainee – one of two cases resulting in rare officer convictions.

In a separate case, five senior police officers were found responsible for the death of a six-month-old baby hit over the head by riot police.

Kenya's police have previously faced accusations of impunity over killings.

Nahashon Mutua received a death sentence for fatally beating detainee Martin Koome with a metal bar in 2013.

Mutua was the officer in charge at a police station in the capital, Nairobi, when Koome was brought in following a domestic fight.

The officer had tried to frame an inmate for the murder but he was convicted in December and sentenced to death on Thursday.

Nahashon Mutua's death sentence trended on Kenyan social media within minutes of his sentencing. Not many Kenyans would have expected the outcome. Policemen in Kenya have got away with it before: brutal beatings, torture and even broad daylight killings, some caught on camera.

The state stubbornly refuses to acknowledge it as a widespread problem; dismissing the cases as individual bad apples. But all the hard work of human rights groups, public pressure and the six-year-old Independent Police Oversight Authority (Ipoa) is beginning to bear fruit.

More officers are getting charged and prosecutors are beginning to win cases. The civilian-led Ipoa is getting plaudits for holding police officers accountable, and many Kenyans hope this new trend will be a deterrent.

Amnesty International says justice has prevailed against extrajudicial killings, but maintains it does not support the death penalty, which is still part of Kenyan law.

Chief Inspector Mutua was the officer in charge of Ruaraka police station when a suspect, Martin Koome Manyara, was brought in following a domestic brawl, back in December 2013.

Neighbours who heard the incident reported the matter to the police.

During the case, the court heard how Mutua had tried covering up the murder several times, including faking a report, freeing suspects present during the night of the incident and even charging one cellmate, Kelvin Odhiambo, with the murder of Koome.

It was Mr Odhiambo who sought the help of the oversight authority who eventually uncovered Mutua's behaviour. Charges against Mr Odhiambo were dropped and he turned state witness.

In another courtroom on the same day, five police commanders were found responsible for the death of baby Samantha Pendo.

Samantha was beaten on the head in the middle of clashes between police and demonstrators in Kisumu, in the west of Kenya, after Uhuru Kenyatta was announced as the winner of the presidential election in 2017. She died in hospital three days later.

The magistrate also ordered the director of public prosecutions to investigate 31 more officers who might be linked to her death.

In September, the BBC's Africa Eye investigative unit highlighted police impunity in Kenya, covering the story of a notorious officer who became national news after mobile footage showed him gunning down two apparently unarmed men in broad daylight.

The film focused on one Nairobi neighbourhood, Eastleigh.

Kidnap trial: Accused rearrested after court release

0

The trial of the 19-year-old Junior High School (JHS) student by the Akyem Swedru Circuit Court for allegedly kidnapping a 20-year-old female JHS student, took a dramatic turn when the police rearrested the accused after he had been discharged by the court.

The accused, Joseph Prah, a JHS 2 student of Akyem Manso appeared before the court last Monday after being remanded in police custody for allegedly kidnapping Georgina Ama Amenyo, a JHS 3 student from Akyem Anamase.

In his ruling, the presiding judge, Mr Alexander Oworae, said: “The facts do not support the charge levelled against the accused.”

“Even though the accused pleaded guilty, in the interest of justice, therefore, the matter will be struck out. Accused is discharged,” he added.

As soon as Prah was discharged and went out of the courtroom, the police rearrested him to face another trial since the whereabouts of the girl is still not known.

Reasons

Giving reason why the accused was rearrested in an interview with the Daily Graphic at Oda last Monday, the Oda Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr F.S. Adikah, said Joseph Prah still had a case to answer.

He said since the accused had confessed accommodating the missing girl for a night and her brassier, cover cloth and a pair of shoes were found in his bedroom, he had to assist the police to trace the whereabouts of Georgina.

Facts

The facts of the case as presented by the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Fabian Sallah, were that at about 4 a.m. on January 12, 2019, Georgina, a JHS 3 student, left her home at Anamase but failed to return.

On January 24, 2019, Georgina’s mother, Madam Esther Bradu, following her own investigations, traced her secret boyfriend, Prah, to Akyem Manso and questioned him of the whereabouts of her daughter.

Admittance

Prah admitted having accommodated Georgina for one day, but claimed that he saw her off the following day to return to Anamase.

When Georgina still failed to return home, her mother lodged a complaint with the police resulting in the arrest of Prah on January 28, 2019 to assist the police in investigations into the matter.

During police interrogation, Prah insisted that he saw the girl off at Manso on January 13, 2019.

C/R: Woman who caused amputation of 5-yr-old stepson’s hand fined GHC1,020

0

The woman who accidentally inflicted cutlass wounds on the hand of her 5-year-old stepson has been fined 85 penalty unit equivalent to GHC 1,020 or in default serve 18 months in jail. Efua Abeduwa pleaded guilty to the charge of causing harm to the boy at the Abura Dunkwa District Court in the Central Region

A story broke of how a 22-year-old woman was said to have accidentally inflicted cutlass wound on the left arm of the stepson about a month ago at Ahomfie, a village near Abura Dunkawa and left it untreated. A week after, the wound started to deteriorate and gradually got out of hands resulting in the decomposition of the arm. The left forearm of the boy was rendered non-functional as doctors said the veins and cells in it had all died. The stepmother said that she did not intend to cause injury to the stepson and that what happened was accidental.

Two men spotted the boy in town at Ahomfi on Monday, January 28 and became alarmed by rotten hand. Shocked by the boy’s story, the two immediately reported the matter to the District Director of NCCE, Mrs. Ellen Osei who also reported same to the police before taking him to the hospital the same day for medical examination.

The District Magistrate Court at Abura Dunkwa Kwamankese in the Central Region remanded Efua Abaduwa into police custody after she was picked up and charged provisionally for causing harm.

Thirty-six-year-old father of the boy, David Mensah, was also remanded for abetment.

Making their second appearance in court on Thursday, the court presided over by Justice Anthony Tabiri Abebrese said he took into consideration the condition of the stepmother [she’s pregnant] and the fact that she pleaded guilty to the charge.

Second accused, David Mensah, the biological father of the boy, pleaded not guilty to the charge of abetment to the crime and has been remanded to prison custody to reappear on the 28th Of February, 2019 where a full trial will begin.

Third accused, Isaac Eduful, who treated the boy at his facility when the boy’s hand was almost decomposing, was also hauled before the court.

The Prosecutors amended the earlier charge to include Mr Eduful since they believe he played a part in the boy’s current predicament.

He pleaded guilty to the charge of abetment but with an explanation. The court rejected his explanation that he had compassion on the boy and wanted to do something to help him.

He told the court, the boy was brought to him on the 21st of January, 2019 and even though, he did not have any license he had compassion on the boy and decided to treat him.

The court fined him 50 penalty units, equivalent to GHC 600 or in default serve 12 months in jail.

Curious residents who filled the court today expressed their disappointment at the punishment meted out to the stepmother after the court’s decision was announced. Some of them who spoke to Atinka News, said the punishment to the stepmother was too light, considering the permanent damage caused to the boy.

Meanwhile, the 5-year-old boy whose hand has been amputated is responding to treatment at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

Ghanaians descend on Asamoah Gyan over DNA results

0

Ghanaians have attacked Blackstars Captain, Asamoah Gyan, on social media after a DNA paternity test conducted on his three children proved he is the biological father of the children.

The results of the test that vindicated his wife, Gifty Gyan, broke on social media on Wednesday and the Blackstars captain has been trending ever since.

Soon after the revelation, most Ghanaians took to social media to lambaste the Blackstars Captain for 'disgracing' his beautiful wife. Some have advised his wife to sue him for defamation and also push for divorce.

Others have also dared the brother and manager of the footballer, Baffour Gyan, to conduct same test on his children to verify if they are truly his.  It is alleged that Baffour Gyan pushed his brother to demand for a DNA test under his supervision.

The Blackstar Captain earlier demanded for a DNA test after he allegedly suspected infidelity on the part of his wife.

Information gathered from Modern Ghana indicated that according to top officials at Medilab where the test was conducted, the DNA samples taken from Asamoah Gyan, Gifty Gyan and the three children (Frederick Gyan, Raphael Gyan and Ohemaa Gyan) proved 100 percent that all children belong to Asamoah Gyan.

Otumfuo outdoors committee to probe KNUST violence

0

The Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Thursday inaugurated a three-member committee to investigate a riot by students last October which led to the closure of the University.

The committee is chaired by retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Rose Constance Owusu. Other members are Very Rev. Mrs Ama Afo Blay, former Director General of the Ghana Education Service, and Mr David Adu Osei, Ashanti Regional Director of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), with Mr Kofi Owusu, Registrar of Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs as secretary.

The committee which has not been given any time line, has the mandate to investigate all the circumstances leading to the disturbances and also make recommendations to forestall a future recurrence.

Students of the university went on the rampage upon the insistence of University Council to convert remaining males-only halls, Katanga and Unity, into unisex halls. The students had also alleged systematic maltreatment by university authorities. They destroyed public and private property and clashed with security operatives.

In the ensuing confusion, the council was dissolved, leading to a bitter stalemate between campus labour unions and government.
