Photos: Bawumia shows love to street kids on Val’s Day

0

The Vice President of the Republic, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, spent the morning of the day universally acclaimed as the day of love, Valentine’s Day, with Rev Father Andrew Campbell and parishioners of the Christ The King Catholic Church to bring some cheer into the lives of street children at their daily Soup Kitchen.

The "CTK Soup Kitchen" is an initiative of Rev. Father Andrew Campbell with support from the Church to feed and help the less privileged, especially street children, and provide skills training to help them earn a living, find their feet and move away from the streets into permanent accommodation and livelihoods.

Some of the children showed their musical talents on the guitar and in rap, with an exhibition of beads created by the children also put on display.

In brief remarks, Vice President Bawumia thanked Fr Campbell and his staff for their humanitarian gesture, pointing out that every society is judged by the way it treats the needy and underprivileged.

“It is very easy to care about yourself, but very difficult to care about others. I want to thank Fr Campbell, his staff and parishioners of Christ The King Church for their care for these children. To provide breakfast every morning for these unfortunate ones is no easy feat, and I wish to personally thank you for all your efforts,” he stated.

Vice President Bawumia advised the children to stay out of trouble despite their difficult circumstances, saying “We think you’re special, and today we want to assure you that we love you and have not forgotten about you. Stay away from drugs and fights. They will only make your lives worse.”

“Let us show love and care for each other,” Vice President Bawumia urged society, adding “On our part, Government will continue to engage with all stakeholders as we work to provide shelter, education and skills training for our less privileged brothers and sisters.”

Mahama is visionless, money-conscious – Ambassador Osei

0

Ghana’s Special Envoy to the United Arab Emirates Ambassador Daniel Osei has said his former boss John Mahama only thinks about about ‘money, money’ and has no plan of moving this country to a greater level

In an interview on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa FM, Ambassador Osei who was appointed by Mahama to serve as Ambassador revealed that ex-President Mahama was not serious about The governance of Ghana.

According to him, Mahama was rather chasing money.

He revealed how he secured a deal for Ghana’s Abu Dhabi embassy to be constructed for free but when “I informed Mr Mahama about it and told him how important it will be for Ghana to have that embassy to foster strong relationship with the gulf country, but shockingly he told me that we’ll build the embassy ourself when we come back to power in 2017, and that we don’t need their help”. Ambassador Osei said.

“I was sad and it shows clearly that, that was not his focus, his focus was not aspiring for greatness for the country. All Mahama knows is money, money, money. Let’s not elect him to lead the NDC again, we have better alternatives, leaders who are visionaries.” He wrote.

“They did everything to stop me but I had to fight them and there’s an email trail of my conversations to come to Ghana, I could have just sat quietly somewhere but I came down to Ghana and contributed my quota toward pushing the party. I came down several months before the elections to campaign and in any constituency that I worked we won. So it’s not about the person.

He added: “When I was given the position and I went to UAE, I went there with the intention to serve my country and I did my best. Many countries don’t have embassies at Abu Dhabi so I began moves to ensure that Ghana establishes an Embassy at Abu Dhabi and also help them establish one in Ghana. I met with the Emirate Foreign Affairs representative in Dubai and set up a meeting in Abu Dhabi and they agreed to help us set up an embassy and also help us with funding to do it.” He added.

Kotoko beats Zesco to keep Confed. Cup dream alive

0

Two-time African champions, Asante Kotoko S/C, put up a spirited performance to record a 2-1 victory over Zambia’s Zesco United in a Confedration of Africa Football (CAF) Confederations Cup group stage clash at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi, on Wednesday.

The Porcupine Warriors, who lost their first match against Sudan’s Al-Hilal, needed a win at all cost to keep their dream on course to qualify to the knock-out stage.

The homers fired from all angles on commencement of the game and took the lead in the eighth minute, courtesy indefatigable midfielder, Kwame Bonsu.

The goal-scorer unleashed a thunderbolt a shot from a Songne Yacouba well-laid pass, which took a deflection of Zesco’s defence to hit the back of the net.

The Zambians responded swiftly with some brilliant counter-attacks and nearly profited from their efforts in the 15th minute, but Simon Silwimba’s threatening pass across Kotoko’s goal line would go waste.

Jesse Jackson Were, who was expected to lead Zesco’s onslaught, was a pale shadow of himself in most parts of the game and it came as no surprise when he missed from the spot-kick in the 18th minute.

This was after Kotoko’s Abdul Ganiyu fouled one of the visitors’ attackers in the 18-yard box.

Kotoko, having survived this scare opened up the game to score their second goal in the 24th minute through speedster Emmanuel Gyamfi.

The visitors brought on Enoch Sabumukam for Clement Mwape in the 34th minute, however, this would not change the complexion of the game as the homers defended their lead gallantly to end the first half.

Zesco introduced Rahim Osmanu into the game in the 64th minute, replacing a tired-looking Were, and the visitors began to attack Kotoko at this stage, missing some decent chances within the spate of four minutes.

The Zambians managed to score a consolation goal in the 71st minute, and it was Osmanu who soared above the Kotoko defencemen to nod home an aerial pass.

The Ghanaian giants lived dangerously in the closing stages of the match, and in spite of a red card being shown to Zesco’s Kondwani Mtonga, the visitors would continue to press in an attempt to fetch the equalizer until the match ended.

5 Bodies found in Liberia mine pit

0

The bodies of five people have been recovered from a collapsed pit in an illicit gold mine in north-eastern Liberia, a local official has said.

Around 35 people are still believed to be missing after the walls of the pit caved in on Saturday.

The search for the dead and for any survivors is being carried out without specialist equipment by miners using their bare hands.

The gold field in Nimba County is a major centre for illicit mining.

According to the county administrator, David Dorr Cooper, more than 100,000 people work in the mine, near the town of Tapeta.

He said the field attracts workers from across the region, some of whom are armed. He described the area around the mine as "lawless".

Local authorities have so far failed in their efforts to shut down the unregulated site.

Poverty and a weak economy mean there is no shortage of Liberians willing to risk death in illicit gold mines, says the BBC's Jonathan Paye-Layleh in the capital, Monrovia.

Mr Cooper told the BBC that the miners conducting the rescue operation themselves faced dangerous conditions in the pit.

They were using their hands to remove debris, he said, and would not use excavators – even if these were available – because of the risk of harming any trapped survivors.

The five bodies recovered on Wednesday had been swiftly buried because they were already decomposing, he said.

A senior doctor at Jackson F Doe Memorial Hospital in Tappita told the BBC he had been treating survivors from Saturday's disaster for cuts, broken limbs and dehydration.

13 apps that can help ease depression and anxiety

0

Today, the right app can help you sleep better, train harder, eat cleaner, and—according to new research from Northwestern Medicine and funded by the National Institutes of Health—some apps can even reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.

In the study, 96 people using a suite of 13 apps called IntelliCare (created by Northwestern doctors and researchers for the study) four times a day for eight weeks saw a 50 percent drop in the severity of their depression and anxiety symptoms. It's an outcome similar to what doctors expect through psychotherapy or antidepressants, the study authors say. (And unlike therapy or meds, the apps are all available for free in the Google Play store, with iOS versions on the way.)

So what makes these 13 stand out from the more than 1,500 depression-related apps that already exist?

According to Stephen Schueller, Ph.D., coauthor of the study, mental health apps tend to offer one of two experiences: Some offer one catch-all technique aimed at making you feel better—so you download the app, decide the approach doesn't work for you, and quit using it. And some offer a lot of different features, making them tricky to use (wasn't this supposed to calm me down?).

IntelliCare is different: "Instead of building one app with a lot of features, we built 13 that focus on different aspects of depression and anxiety," Schueller says. There are apps that target night anxiety, social anxiety, lack of activity, and obsessive thinking—all common causes of general depression and anxiety—and each is designed by Northwestern clinicians and based on validated techniques used by therapists. (P.S. Here's Why You Should Stop Saying You Have Anxiety If You Really Don't.)

For example, My Mantra teaches you what a mantra is and how the right one can help you succeed. With pre-loaded examples—"I am resilient" or "I am strong"—it also guides you to craft your own. Slumber Time helps you create a good bedtime checklist (no technology, no TV!). Thought Challenger trains you to catch negative thoughts as they pop up. The app asks you to type in your negative thought and then an alternative, helpful way to think about the problem.

The apps don't have to be a huge time commitment either. In the study, people used each app for just about one minute at a time (which added up to 195 times over the eight weeks). "We know people tend to use their phones in brief bursts," says Schueller. "The exercises are meant to be simple, brief, and focused on getting people to do things as opposed to giving them information." (These Anxiety-Reducing Solutions for Common Worry Traps Could Also Help.)

It's an important distinction, considering many of us—1 in 5 of us any given year—struggle with mental health issues. But remember, the apps are not a cure-all. If you think you're suffering from depression or anxiety, touch base with your doctor to find out the best course of action. Ultimately, finding out what works for you can be the key to lifting your spirits—and a few downloads could play an effective role in that. "Bono East Officially Created; Techiman Is Capital” – Akufo-Addo

0

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has, by Constitutional Instrument (C.I. 113), signified the official creation of the Bono East Region, and named Techiman as its capital.

At a ceremony at Jubilee House, on Wednesday, 13th February, 2019, President Akufo-Addo noted that Bono East, an enclave which is ethnically diverse, representing about two-thirds of the entire land mass of the then Brong Ahafo Region, and whose predominant economic activity is agriculture, Bono East, with significant deposits of natural resources, is not as developed as it should be.

That is why, according to the President, after receiving a petition from 14 chiefs from traditional areas within the municipalities and districts of the proposed Bono East Region for the creation of the region, he referred it to the Council of State for its advice.

It will be recalled that, on 15th August, 2017, the Council advised that a Commission of Inquiry be established to determine whether or not there was a need and substantial demand for the creation of the proposed Bono East Region.

The 9-member Brobbey Commission established that, indeed, there was a need and a substantial demand for the creation of the Region, and when the time came for the constitutional threshold to be met in the 27th December, 2018, referendum, 99.5%, out of the 85.82% of the electorate who turned out to vote, voted YES.

President Akufo-Addo assured that “this Government, which facilitated the creation of this region, in compliance with the provisions of the Constitution, will help ensure the smooth take-off and development of Bono East.”

He continued, “The creation of the six new regions presents us with the opportunity to serve better the needs of people from these new regions through the effective and efficient reorganization and distribution of our public services and infrastructure.”

To this end, he indicated that he had, within one-week of the declaration of the results of the referendum, constituted a 7-member Government Committee to plan and oversee the rapid development of Bono East.

“In the President’s 2019 Budget Statement, an amount of GH¢20 million has been allocated as seed capital for Bono East to help in the establishment of the needed infrastructure for the smooth take off of the Region, he added.

President Akufo-Addo indicated that the current Regional Minister for Brong-Ahafo, Hon. Evans Opoku-Bobie, MP, has been appointed to act as caretaker Minister.

DNA confirms Asamoah Gyan is father of Gifty’s children

0

Black Stars Captain, Asamoah Gyan, is indeed the father of his three children after a paternity test was conducted, Ghanaweb can confirm.

The footballer, after filing for divorce from his wife, Gifty Gyan, late last year allegedly denied fathering their three children demanding a DNA test to be carried out on all three to ascertain if he is the father of the children.

However a reliable source has confirmed that the DNA results turned out positive hence all the children are his.

Background

Ghanaian footballer and captain of the Ghana Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan has allegedly filed for divorce from his wife, Gifty Gyan, at the Divorce and Matrimonial Division of the High Court, Accra.

The footballer denied fathering their three children and demanded a DNA test be carried out on all three to ascertain if he is the father of the children.

GhanaWeb.com is reliably informed that Gyan and his wife Gifty have not seen eye to eye in the last few months, but the desire of the Black Stars captain to officially terminate the five-year marriage is a clear indication that their differences have now become irreconcilable.

The news outlet is also reliably informed that the footballer, who filed for divorce in August this year is currently making preparation to marry an Accra-based business woman, once his marriage to Gifty is annulled by the court.

Although Gyan has had a ‘scandal-laden’ career, he has successfully shielded his wife and three children from the public eye and media scrutiny.

Details of why Asamoah Gyan’s marriage to Gifty has hit the rocks are unknown but sources close to the estranged wife say Gyan grew cold towards Gifty after another woman came into his life.

The said woman was in June this year mistaken for Asamoah Gyan’s wife at the grand opening of his new sports bar located in Osu, Accra.

Interestingly, the same lady was mentioned as Asamoah Gyan’s wife when Emmanuel ‘Game Boy’ Tagoe fought his last bout in defense of his IBO World title this month.

She was also spotted in town with the footballer when he came to Ghana recently for his summer vacation.

When rumors started making the rounds earlier this year about a possible love-affair between Gyan and the said woman, the business woman denied it.

She explained that her relationship with Gyan was purely professional as she owns a property that houses one of Gyan’s companies. But investigation by GhanaWeb reveals that the relationship between the business woman and Asamoah Gyan is beyond ‘landlord- tenant’ relationship as the two are currently courting and set to marry after his divorce to his current wife Gifty Gyan.

The latest indication of the current troubles in the marriage was the alleged seizure of Gifty’s passport by Baffour Gyan, who is the elder brother of Asamoah Gyan, to supposedly prevent her from returning to Asamoah’s residence in the United Kingdom.

Gyan and Gifty have been together since 2003 and got married in 2013 after their second child was born.

Sources close to Asamoah Gyan confirmed GhanaWeb’s story but declined to comment publicly.
