Group "mad " over budget for Tourism ministry Ambassadors

0

The Federation of Concerned Arts Professionals (FOCAP) has described the budget reportedly allocated to tourism ambassadors to undertake different projects as outrageous.

The Ministry of Tourism reported displayed a chart with projects to be embarked by its ambassadors as well as corresponding amounts to be spent on the projects during a press meeting.

In an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive Thursday, convenor for FOCAP, Mel Kwasi Davies, explained that although some of the projects are beneficial to the growth of the ministry, the execution plan is extremely out of order.

According to him, one of Okyeame Kwame's four projects which is aimed at promoting cocoa consumption already coincides with a project launched by the national buffer stock company and Benjamin's Hot chocolate.

He called on the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, as well as the finance Minister to look into the projects and the proposed amounts to be spent.

However, speaking on the same issue, convenor at the Center for Intellectual Property Advocacy Ghana (CIPAG), Kwame Kodua Atuahene, urged FOCAP to desist from making hasty generalizations and focus on analyzing the creative content of the proposed projects.

He added that the ambassadors in themselves are influencial and that it will be prudent for the group to pay attentionto the content.

"Creativity is not easy, it is very difficult to come up with creative contents only for it to be opened up to the general public. That would not be fair", he added.

Reward artistes in their lifetime  – CIPAG to music societies

0

The Center for Intellectual Property Advocacy Ghana (CIPAG) has extended its condolence to the family of the late dancehall songstress, Priscilla Opoku Kwarteng, Ebony.

In a statement, convenor for CIPAG, Kwame Kodua Atuahene, descibed Ebony's talent as extraordinary attributing it to the number of hits the artiste had released in a year.

He however called on music rights collection societies in the country to strengthen its system to make music rewarding for artiste and their families during their hay days and even after their demise.

"While, we mourn with her family, friends, fans, the music and creative industry fraternity, this sad loss provides a very rude reminder of the early demise of other talented artistes and yet another opportunity for music right collection societies in Ghana to strengthen their system to make music very rewarding for creators during their lifetime and for their families when they depart", he added.

Ebony Reigns died in a gruesome road accident that occurred late Thursday evening on the Sunyani-Kumasi road.

Below is the full statement

The Center for Intellectual Property Advocacy Ghana (CiPaG) like many music enthusiasts is extremely worried by the demise of the cheery Dancehall Queen known in Entertainment circles as Ebony Reign. She demonstrated enormous creativity to underline the abundance of talent in Ghana. The fact that she impacted the music landscape for only eleven months with successive hits is enough emphasis of this extraordinary talent.

While, we mourn with her family, friends, fans, the music and creative industry fraternity, this sad loss provides a very rude reminder of the early demise of other talented artistes and yet another opportunity for music right collection societies in Ghana to strengthen their system to make music very rewarding for creators during their lifetime and for their families when they depart.

It is instructive that, the Copyright laws of Ghana, provides that, the rights of authors including

their economic rights are protected during the life of the author and seventy (70) years after the death of the author among others.

It remains our expectation that, this sorry experience will serve as the catalyst required to rally the industry around to advance existing economic opportunities as a better tribute for the memory of Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng (Ebony Reign).

Thank you

Kwame Koduah Atuahene

Founder/Convenor

Syria war: Israeli fighter jet crashes under Syria fire, military says

0

An Israeli F-16 fighter jet has crashed amid Syrian anti-aircraft fire after an offensive against Iranian targets in Syria, the Israeli military says.

The two pilots parachuted to safety before the crash in northern Israel. It is believed to be the first time Israel has lost a jet in the Syrian conflict.

Israel was carrying out strikes after the launch of an Iranian drone into Israel. The drone was intercepted.

Syria accused Israel of "aggression", as Israel then launched more strikes.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) tweeted: "Moments ago, IAF aircraft, targeted the Syrian Aerial Defense System & Iranian targets in Syria. 12 targets, including 3 aerial defense batteries & 4 Iranian military targets, were attacked. Anti-aircraft missiles were fired towards Israel, triggering alarms in northern Israel."

Israeli strikes in Syria are not unusual, the BBC's Middle East correspondent Tom Bateman says, but the loss of an Israeli fighter jet marks a serious escalation.

How did events unfold on Saturday morning?

In a statement, the Israeli military said "a combat helicopter successfully intercepted an Iranian UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] that was launched from Syria and infiltrated Israel".

It said the drone was identified quickly and was "under surveillance until the interception".

The drone went down on Israeli territory and was "in our possession", IDF spokesperson Brig Gen Ronen Manelis said.

The military said that in response the IDF "targeted Iranian targets in Syria". It said the mission deep inside Syrian territory was successfully completed.

After coming under Syrian anti-aircraft fire, the F-16's two crew ejected and were later taken to hospital. One of them was "severely injured as a result of an emergency evacuation", the IDF said.

It was not clear whether the F-16 jet was hit by anti-aircraft fire or went down near Harduf for other reasons.

It is the first time Israel has lost an aircraft in combat since 2006 when an Israeli helicopter was shot down over Lebanon by a Hezbollah rocket, the Jerusalem Post reports.

All five crew on board – including a female flight mechanic – were killed in that incident.

Red alert sirens sounded in areas of northern Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights due to Syrian anti-aircraft fire.

Residents reported hearing a number of explosions and heavy aerial activity in the area near Israel's borders with Jordan and Syria.

Syrian state media quoted a military source as saying that the country's air defences opened fire in response to an Israeli act of "aggression" against a military base on Saturday, hitting "more than one plane".

The deputy chief of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Hossein Salami, said he could not confirm reports that an Iranian drone was intercepted by Israel, Iran's Tasnim news agency report.

Later on Saturday, the army said a new wave of attacks was launched against 12 Syrian and Iranian targets in Syria.

Eight of the Syrian targets belonged to the fourth Syrian division near Damascus, IDF spokesman Jonathan Conricus said.

All the Israeli aircraft from this sortie returned safely.

"Syrians are playing with fire when they allow Iranians to attack Israel," the spokesman warned.

He added that Israel was willing to exact a heavy price in response but "we are not looking to escalate the situation".

Iran – Israel's arch-enemy – is a key supporter of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose troops have been fighting rebel groups since 2011.

Tehran has sent military advisers, volunteer militias and, reportedly, hundreds of fighters from its Quds Force, the overseas arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).

It is also believed to have supplied thousands of tonnes of weaponry and munitions to help President Assad's forces and the pro-Iranian Lebanese Hezbollah movement, which is fighting on Syria's side.

Tehran has faced accusations that it is seeking to establish not just an arc of influence but a logistical land supply line from Iran.

Bawumia: Police Service must work hard to erase corruption tag

0

Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia, has urged the Police Service to work hard to weed out corrupt elements  within its fold.

According to him, report after report of the Afrobarometer cites the Service as the most perceived corrupt public institution in Ghana and that “this is not right and it can no longer be the status quo.”

The vice president was speaking at the Graduation Ceremony of the 47th Cadet Officers Course at the Ghana Police Academy in Accra Friday.

“It is often said that the public is the police and the police is the public. Currently, the Police Service, unfortunately, suffers diminishing public image, some say lower than it should have. Report after report of the Afrobarometer cites the Service, fairly or unfairly, as the most perceived corrupt public institution in Ghana,” Dr Bawumia said.

“This is not right and it can no longer be the status quo. Citizens can only have confidence in the Police Service when our men and women in uniform are seen to be honest and would enforce the law without fear or favour. Your task, as Officer Cadets, is to help ensure that this perception no longer holds,” he added.
Touching on equipping the police, Dr Bawumia said, his government was determined to give whatever support is required to “ensure that we have the service that the people of Ghana deserve.”

He said the government, will be this year, rehabilitate police stations across the country to standardize the infrastructure.

“We aim to build a robust, effective, efficient and disciplined police force. The policy of my government on law and order is to focus more on proactive and preventive policing, rather than reactive. We will do so by increasing both visibility and capacity. An initial amount of GH¢800 million, in the short term, will support the important task of reducing crime and increasing public safety,” the vice president said.

He said this year alone, the government plans to recruit 4,000 more police personnel.

“We know that what matters most is not the number of police officers we recruit, but the number of officers we deploy, and how effectively they are deployed. We are improving the data analytics of the service to make policing more efficient and alive to modern trends in crime,” he said.

Dr Bawumia disclosed that negotiations have just been completed for the rollout of Phase II of the Alpha Project, which will involve the deployment of 8,700 CCTV cameras in all 216 districts, with three command centres in Accra, Kumasi and Tamale.

Soldier who died with Ebony to face court-martial

0

The mortal remains of the military officer who died in car crash with Ghanaian dancehall artiste Ebony will face court-martial, credible sources at the Ghana Armed Forces  told media.

According to the sources at the military high command, Francis Atisu Vondee of the Ghana Air force stationed at the Accra Air force Base in Burma Camp was not officially deployed for the bodyguard duties.

The officer, who was travelling with Ebony died when their Jeep crashed a VIP bus Thursday night on the Sunyani-Kumasi highway while returning to Accra from Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Three of the four occupants – Ebony, Vondee and Ebony’s close friend known as Franky- died in the accident. Their driver however survived the accident and is currently in critical condition in an undisclosed hospital.

Checks at the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed Vondee who was in a military uniform at the time of the accident, was not assigned to perform bodyguard duties, and that he was doing “purely private and personal business”.

According to our sources at the military high command in Accra, investigations would be conducted into the matter and once it is established he was not officially sanctioned for bodyguard duties, his body would be court-martialed.

That is his body would be charged for being absent without leave (AWOL). That, the sources say is in line with the laws and statutes governing the Ghana Army.

The sources said if found guilty of the charge, his family “could be denied his benefits” due him, including insurance packages.

Akufo-Addo’s growth rate misleading – UCC  lecturer

0

Head of Finance Department of the School of Business, University of Cape Coast, Prof. John Gatsi, has vehemently disagreed with Ghana’s industrial growth rate as mentioned by President Akufo Addo in his State of the Nation Address (SONA).

The President submitted that the Ghanaian Industry has been revived from a rate of 0.5% in 2016 to 17.7% in 2017.

The very vocal Professor described such figures as misleading; explaining that anytime industry sector growth is mentioned it seems to people as if it is manufacturing.

Speaking in an interview with Kaakyire Ofori Ayim on Atinka FM’s “Simpieso”, Prof. Gatsi pointed out that the oil and gas and mining sectors are part of the industry and the entire growth led by these sectors.

“So if we take away the mining, oil and gas sector, what is the growth we are talking about in the industry”, he added.

According to him, for a very long time the sector has not help us in our efforts to create jobs and raise revenue hence we need to have all-inclusive growth where agriculture and other sectors contributions are sizeable.

“If we don’t do all-inclusive growth and we continue to fall on oil and gas and minerals then it means we are not doing anything different….and that the statistics points out vividly”, he said.

He however called for calculated efforts to attain a sizeable growth in agriculture and as well help develop the skill of young people for production and creativity to enhance economic development.

Also on job creations, he queried the 100,000 created for youth with the Nation Builders Corps this year is a continuous mechanism of absorbing people from time to time in the fields of health, education and the police service.

Rather, we need implementable programmes to create jobs as well as roadmap to deal with the unemployment since it is increasingly becoming a security issue.

Prof. John Gatsi added that the 745000 jobs create by government is disputed and that indeed if such persons are employed for the Planting for Food and Jobs, the impact would have been heavily felt.

Interestingly, in reality these jobs are conspicuously missing.
