Dr Agyepong re-elected as ESPA President

0

Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong has been re-elected as President of the Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA) for the next two years – 2022-2024 – at the 5th ESPA AGM held in Accra on Tuesday, December 14, 2021.

With his re-election, Dr Siaw Agyepong becomes the only person to have held the position for the second time.

The AGM, chaired by Dr Siaw Agyepong, saw other members such as Danny Annang elected as 1st Vice President, and Williams Stanly Owusu, 2nd Vice President.

In his acceptance speech, Dr Siaw Agyepong, who is also the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), thanked members of the ESPA for renewing their confidence in him and pledged to work with the other executives to make the association a formidable one.

“Let me thank all ESPA members for the unflinching support that you have given to the leadership of the association and for your tireless efforts in making this year’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) a success,” he expressed.

He urged members of ESPA to rally behind him and the executives to work together to make Ghana clean, great and strong “through our concerted efforts.”

Meanwhile, following the decommissioning and re-engineering of the Kpone landfill site, the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR) has disclosed that it has secured a 65.5 acre land at Ayidan, in the Ga South Municipal of the Greater Accra Region, for the construction of a new engineered landfill.

According to the sector Minister, Mrs Abena Dapaah, who made the disclosure in a speech read on her behalf during the 5th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA) in Accra, on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, the completion of this landfill will take care of final waste treatment and disposal to augment the massive investment made by the private sector.

The 5th AGM of ESPA brought together all the regional chapters of the ESPA, and it was themed: “Public Private Sector Engagement For A More Sustainable Waste Management.”

She added that the ministry was also constructing a waste transfer station at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), which will help address the problem of long haulage distance of members within the northern enclave of Greater Accra.

She commended ESPA members for their support to her ministry since its creation.

“Indeed, ESPA’s mission which is to complement, and support government’s efforts to resolving environmental challenges in communities in Ghana is well in line with the theme for this 5th AGM,” she stressed.

Mrs Dapaah underscored that a strong relationship between the public and private sectors was crucial to ensuring that the gains chalked in the sanitation space were sustained.

“National and home-grown solutions in the sanitation sector have proven to be the answer to our challenges…,” she averred.

It was along this line that she indicated that her ministry was ensuring that engagements with stakeholders including ESPA were deepened to have in place a sustainable waste management landscape.

She called on the citizenry to stop the practice of waste burning, adding that “One in five households in the country practise burning of waste, and such rates surprisingly.do not vary in urban areas from the rural.”

The implications of waste burning on Ghana’s climate, she pointed out, cannot be overemphasised.

According to her, segregation of waste at this point remained the nation’s best approach to recycling.

“Of course, segregation has implications on waste companies which includes additional fleet capacity, additional staff etc., all of which eventually leads to costs in the short to medium term,” she said.

However, Mrs Dapaah said the benefits of waste segregation to the country’s environment were guaranteed in several ways.

These, she mentioned, include prolonged life of landfills, value-addition of salvaged materials, that is, plastics and organic waste, reduced frequency among others.

She assured that her ministry was collaborating with the various metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) to put in place the necessary measures to sensitise and vigorously enforce the sanitation bye-laws to ensure high compliance and attitudinal change among the citizenry towards environmental cleanliness.

The President of ESPA, Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong, in his address, was full of praise for the Akufo-Addo administration for creating an enabling environment for private sector to thrive in the sanitation sector.

“I am delighted to say that the government of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has given true meaning to this mantra. Through His Excellency’s transformational leadership and relevant policy interventions, an enabling environment for the private sector to grow has been created,” he stated.

He said this was an environment that empowers the private sector to do more, and “we in the sector should not waste it nor take it for granted.”

He also applauded Mrs Dapaah for her leadership and supportive role in the sanitation industry.

“The government’s achievement in this sector is unprecedented and historic and it is worthy of note that since independence, over 60 years ago, it is during this administration that Ghana has experienced massive environmental infrastructural improvement.

Thirty-six (36) plants were commissioned within a year! These are 16 IRECoPs, 14 medical waste treatment plants, 4 wastewater treatment facilities in Tema, Takoradi, Tamale and Kumasi.

Others, he said, are decommissioning and reengineering of the two major landfill sites in Kpone in Accra and Oti in the Ashanti Region with technical support from our American Partners using very modern technology.

According to him, ESPA’s membership now stands at 7,500 from a humble beginning of 28 members.

Michael Slater: Ex-cricketer arrested for second time in Sydney

Former Australian cricketer Michael Slater has been charged with breaching a protective order, two months after an alleged domestic violence incident.

Mr Slater, 51, was arrested in Sydney in October and charged with stalking and harassment offences.

He was arrested again on Wednesday after allegedly sending 66 text messages and making 18 calls in breach of an apprehended violence order.

Mr Slater was receiving treatment for an alcohol disorder, a court heard.

A prosecutor described the messages as “harassing and highly offensive in nature”. They were allegedly sent during a two-and-a-half hour window on Tuesday.

His lawyer, James McLoughlin, told a magistrate that his client had “slipped up once” by relapsing with alcohol.

The court granted bail to Mr Slater after hearing he would check into a mental health hospital, and on the condition he would not access a mobile phone.

“Mr Slater should be under no illusions that if he breaches bail, he will be back in custody,” said Magistrate Michelle Goodwin, according to Australian media.

The former batsman was part of the Australian cricket team from 1993 to 2001, playing 74 Tests.

He has since become a high-profile cricket commentator but was let go by Australia’s Channel Seven earlier this year.

Court orders Jacob Zuma back to jail

0

A South African court has ruled that the country’s former President Jacob Zuma should be returned to prison, saying his medical parole was “unlawful”.

The time he has spent out of prison should not be counted in his 15-month sentence, the Pretoria court ruled.

Mr Zuma was released on 5 September for an undisclosed medical condition.

He had been jailed for failing to attend an inquiry into corruption during his presidency.

The 79-year-old handed himself in to police in July after a public stand-off, but his jailing, unprecedented for an ex-president, sparked violent protests and looting.

South Sudan floods affect humanitarian access – UN

Over 835,000 people across the country have been affected by the floodingImage caption: Over 835,000 people across the country have been affected by the flooding

The UN has said access to flooded areas in South Sudan has become a challenge in the quest to offer help to those affected.

The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says funding constraints have also affected humanitarian aid.

The agency says more than 835,000 people across the country have been affected by the flooding since May.

People in Jonglei and the two oil-producing states of Unity and Upper Nile in the northern part of the country are reported to be the worst affected.

Last week, Nicholas Haysom, the head of UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan who visited Bentiu described the situation as “dire”.

He said flood waters were not receding and hundreds of thousands of people remained displaced and in desperate need of assistance.

He said the consequences could be disastrous in terms of food insecurity, lack of healthcare, education and the risk of water-borne diseases.

Bawumia launches Ghana TVET Service

Government’s determination to make Technical and Vocational Education a priority has received a major boost following the launch in Accra of the Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service by the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

This brings together all the technical and vocational programmes run by 19 different Ministries under the ambit of the Ghana TVET Service, with the Director General of the Service reporting to the Minister and Ministry of Education, like her counterpart, Director General of the Ghana Education Service and other agencies under the Ministry.

The operationalization of the Service is also to ensure the smooth take-off of Government’s flagship programme “Free TVET For All”, under which all the TVET Institutions which are now captured under the Ghana TVET Service will be included in the next academic year’s (February 2022) Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) for selection by the Junior High School graduates.

Performing the launch on Tuesday, 14th December 2021 at the Accra Technical Training Centre (ATTC), Vice President Bawumia recalled that before the Akufo-Addo government assumed office in 2017, many challenges including the poor perception of TVET, the multiplicity of standards, testing and certification systems, and an informal TVET system that had been neglected and detached from the formal sector affected the quality of TVET delivery in our institutions.

This made it difficult for the sector to become the key catalyst that could spur industrialization and decent job creation for the citizens of this country but Government, he assured, is tackling many of these issues.

“This Government from 2017, as part of the President’s plan to transform the Technical and Vocational Education and Training in the country, has been streamlining the TVET Sector to ensure that the sector becomes a central force of our national development agenda.

“One of many such initiatives to ensure this, is the establishment of the Ghana TVET Service. In 2017, Government formed a 15-Member Technical Committee with Membership from various Ministries and Agencies to establish the Ghana TVET Service.

“After extensive work and national stakeholder engagement, the Committee presented a Draft Bill to Cabinet for approval in 2019. The draft was later sent to Parliament and assented to by the President of the Republic, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on 29th December 2020 as “Pre-Tertiary Act, 2020 (Act 1049)”.

The essence of Act 1049, Dr Bawumia explained, is to ensure that all TVET Providing Institutions under the 19 Ministries are realigned to the Ghana TVET Service. Hitherto, these TVET Institutions were under the umbrella bodies such as Ghana Education Service’s Technical and Vocational Education Division (GES-TVED); National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI); Opportunities Industrialization Centre Ghana (OICG); Gender, Children and Social Protection; Ghana Regional Appropriate Technology Industrial Service (GRATIS); Community Development Vocational Institutes (CDVI); Youth Leadership and Skills Training Institutes (YLSTI), Social Welfare Training Institutes, Farm Institutes and Technology Solution Centres; and the Integrated Community Centres for Employable Skills (ICCES).

While improving the capacity of the country’s educational sector to create a more robust TVET Service, it is equally important to focus attention on the professional and capacity building of the facilitators and teachers who will train the young people in the various Technical and Vocational Training Institutes, Dr Bawumia noted.

“Thankfully, the Ministry of Education has made significant progress with teacher professionalism to conform with global education standards.

“I, therefore, urge parents of JHS graduates to counsel their wards to consider choosing TVET programmes since these programmes are designed to equip our SHS leavers with practical skills needed for the job market.

Addressing the fears of parents and guardians who may have been worried about a possible truncation of the educational path of children who take the TVET path, Vice President assured: “There is the opportunity for those who complete their TVET programmes to continue from the National Proficiency levels through Certificate levels to HND, B.TECH, M.TECH to the Doctor of Technology level with the National TVET Qualifications Framework (NTVETQF), which the Commission is implementing for TVET.”

The first Director General of the Ghana TVET Service, Mrs Mawusi N. Awity, pledged her outfit’s commitment to meeting the needs of the youth, saying “We will ensure the acquisition of skills by the youth and the elderly to enable them create jobs and help move our beloved Ghana forward.”

The cleanup climaxed activities which included health screening, church service and awards day that were organized to commemorate the 71st birthday of the Okyehene.

The exercise was also meant to improve the sanitation condition of the town and to encourage behavioural change among residents towards maintaining a more hygienic and sanitized environment for the benefit of the people Kyebi.

Members of the OEF joined hands with workers of Zoomlion to disilt gutters and clear areas of rubbish within the principal areas of the town.

Speaking after the exercise, Osaagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, noted that it was necessary to keep a clean environment for good health and urged the people to maintain proper sanitation habits.

“Anybody found to litter the compound with rubbish would be arrested and fined because we cannot always have to leave the cleaning of our environment to Zoomlion.
It should be our collective responsibility,” he stated.

He called on residents of the town to report to the Abuakwa Traditional Council if they found anybody indiscriminately cutting down trees or pouring hot water on trees, adding anyone found culpable would be dealt with.

“Trees comes with it several benefits including providing shade, clean air and environment among others and we urge all residents to desist from cutting trees but rather plant them,” he said.

“I also appeal that dustbins provided would be used for the intended purpose,” he said.

Kim Kardashian passes California ‘baby bar’ law exam

0

Kim Kardashian is one step closer to her dream of becoming a lawyer after revealing she has passed a key law exam on her fourth attempt.

The reality TV star and businesswoman posted the news on social media, urging fans never to give up on goals they have set their mind on.

Kardashian, 41, has spent years advocating for criminal justice reform, including lobbying at the White House.

She announced in 2019 that she wanted to go further and qualify in law.

Without an undergraduate degree, she has been studying on an alternative apprenticeship pathway under the supervised mentorship of lawyers.

Kardashian said she had been previously told that her journey would be “close to impossible” and “harder than the traditional law school route”.

But in an excited announcement on Monday, she said she had passed California’s first-year law students’ exam – also known as the baby bar – on her fourth attempt.

“Looking in the mirror, I am really proud of the woman looking back today in the reflection,” she said about her result.

“For anyone who doesn’t know my law school journey, know this wasn’t easy or handed to me,” she added. “I failed this exam three times in two years, but I got back up each time and studied harder and tried again until I did it!!!”

Kardashian’s tweets praised those who had helped her get through the exam with “10-hour days, daily four-hour zooms” and “practice tests week after week”.

The exam has an overall success rate of about 20%, according to recent pass figures. Kardashian will still have further study and another bar exam on her pathway to qualification.

Kim Kardashian found fame alongside her family on their hit reality television show, Keeping up with the Kardashians, which began airing in 2007. The show saw Kim and her siblings gain huge online followings and business success across a range of industries.

Using her influential platform in a different way, Kardashian has increasingly voiced her support for campaigns to change the US justice system.

She has lobbied for clemency in individual cases and been critical of the long sentences handed down to first-time offenders, and the disproportionate impact the law can have on ethnic minority communities.

Her late father, Robert Kardashian, was himself a lawyer. He was famously part of the legal team that represented former American football star OJ Simpson in his high-profile 1995 murder trial.

In Kardashian’s posts on Monday, she said her father would be “so proud” and “shocked” about her change of path.
