Ghanaian journalist and host of political show ‘Ghana Nie’ on Atinka TV has thrown a challenge to both the current and past Union Executives of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to publicly declare their assets after years of teaching.
The outspoken journalist spoke out against the leadership of prominent teacher associations and unions, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT).
According to him, he argued that union executives are often compromised by political interests and government appointments, leaving them unable to properly fight for teachers’ welfare despite frequent industrial strikes and struggles faced by rank-and-file educators.
Speaking during the live show on Tuesday, Nana Fianko reiterated that he is focused on his strong advocacy for the welfare of teachers.
He empathized that, while some teachers still struggle to survive after years of dedicated service, others have made wealth from the profession, hence throwing a challenge to former President of NAGRAT, Eric Angel Carbonu, to an academic discussion on live television.
“I dare you to tell your current and past Union leaders to come out and declare their assets. People have built mansions; they should be bold enough to declare their assets. The trap will hold people, and I will keenly follow whoever is found to be the culprit. I will face them by fire, air, and land. I’m throwing this challenge to them to declare their assets. I throw a challenge to the former president of NAGRAT, Eric Angel Carbonu, for a debate,” Nana Fianko stated.
However, former NAGRAT boss Eric Angel Carbonu has reacted strongly to the allegations against teachers.
According to Mr. Carbonu, he claims the salary of an assistant director 2 is far better than that of Nana Fianko’s monthly salary.
This statement led to a public back-and-forth and a challenge for an academic discussion, but Mr. Carbonu, on his official Facebook account, said, “I am informed that a certain pin-minded riffraff called Nana Yaw Fianko invited me to Atinka TV. Tell him I have no time to waste.”
