A Finance and Economic Analyst, Seth Ofori Twumasi says the Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is only claiming the successes of the government and disassociating himself from the failures of the government.
His comment follows a statement made Dr Bawumia at his first Nations address.
Speaking at the UPSA auditorium on Wednesday, February 7, Dr Bawumia noted that he will abolish the tax on electronic financial transaction, e-levy, if given the nod as President of Ghana in December 7.
The flagbearer also announced that the Bawumia administration will also abolish the emission tax, tax on betting as well as the proposed 15% VAT on electricity tariffs, if it is in existence by January 2025.
“My administration will introduce a very simple, citizen and business-friendly flat tax regime. A flat tax of a percentage of income for individuals and SMEs, which constitute 98% of all businesses in Ghana, with appropriate exemption thresholds set to protect the poor,” Dr Bawumia said.

Reacting to these on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ama Gyenfa, Seth Ofori Twumasi said a leader usually accepts responsibility but for Dr Bawumia, from his speeches, he seems to be apportioning blame to others always when something goes wrong.
“It looks like for him, he cannot be associated with anything when it is bad. When it is good, He likes it, but when it is bad, He has to blame someone for it,” he said.
Meanwhile he said if Dr Bawumia becomes President, he will not be the Finance Minister, he will not be the one to draw the budget, he will not be the Governor for Bank of Ghana, adding that and even in monetary policy, he will not be the one to handle it.
Seth Ofori Twumasi also said if Dr Bawumia becomes President, there is nothing he can do single handedly, explaining that in the same vein, when they are doing something, they do it in a group.
He said when Dr Bawumia was speaking about the achievements of the government, he used ‘We’ for the things the Government has done but when it gets to the part which did not go well, then he comes in with what he will do.
He said Dr Bawumia spoke like someone in opposition or an independent candidate bringing his own views or policies.
Seth Ofori Twumasi recalled that Dr Bawumia said he had arrested the cedi and solely claimed that without mentioning the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta’ name.
“If you say you arrested the cedi and now the cedi is out, you want to blame it on someone else?”, he quizzed.
He said Dr Bawumia made it known that the Government had created 2.1 million jobs from 2017 to 2022 but he did not state the jobs they destroyed.
“With the negatives, apart from the ones he will say he is not responsible for it, he will blame it on covid. Meanwhile, we know that even with what happened during covid, for those who died, it is not covid that killed them solely, but they had underlying illnesses and the covid infection triggered it,” he said.
