Outspoken NPP Communications Team member, Benjamin Gyewu Appiah, popularly known as Bengazy, has described the nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice as a “Judicial Galamsey,” alleging that the process has been tainted by political interference.
Speaking passionately on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie – Morning Agenda, hosted by Aa Gyenfa Ofosu Darkwah, Bengazy warned that the judiciary must be insulated from political manipulation to protect Ghana’s democratic foundations.
“This is a Judicial Galamsey and every Ghanaian must be concerned,” he declared. “The judiciary should be fair and free from political influence.”
He referenced a past statement attributed to former President John Mahama, claiming that the former president had once promised to populate the judiciary with NDC-aligned judges—a development he believes undermines the impartiality of the bench.
“If the NPP comes in the future and says they can’t work with Justice Baffoe-Bonnie or any Chief Justice appointed, will that be good for our democracy?” he asked.
Bengazy also criticized the process leading to Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination, suggesting it was politically influenced and part of a broader NDC agenda. He contrasted it with the appointment of the former Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, which he said was based on the recommendation of the Judicial Council, not political calculations.
“The appointment of Baffoe-Bonnie is all because they think he is the most senior person at the bench, which has caused hatred for Torkornoo,” he said, implying the former Chief Justice’s tenure was unfairly targeted.
In a scathing remark, Bengazy said the current direction of governance under the NDC risks scaring off investors and eroding national trust.
“What the NDC is doing doesn’t show any good sign for investors. I suggest we sell the state and share the money amongst everyone because what the NDC is doing is very, very bad,” he lamented.
Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination awaits parliamentary vetting and approval, but the political discourse surrounding it has already stirred controversy, with sharp divisions emerging across party lines.
