Coup d’état: Let’s find ways of accommodating each other- Akufo Addo

The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has urged the Public to learn to accommodate each other’s differences in order to make things work for the benefit of the people irrespective of challenges the country is facing.

He observed that certain elements have attempted to advocate for Coup d’état as the answers to the problem of the Nation.

Delivering the 2022 State of the Nations Address on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday 30th March 2022, the President said,”We came through a long and torturous journey to arrive at today’s consensus on our multi party democracy but the last 29 years of our fourth republic have shown that this is the most productive period since our independence.”

He said both the major political parties in our country, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have made positive contributions to this development.

He said,”There is work to be done on building our institutions but our democracy is worth fighting for. It is up to us to find a way to accommodate each other and our differences to make things work for the benefit of the Ghanaian people.”

President Akufo Addo again observed that coup d’états have re-entered our discourse because of the turmoil in our neighbourhood.

He noticed that the West African Region is back in the international news for all the wrong reasons.

“We are back again as the Region of Political Instability and the place for coups. Long and bitter experience led ECOWAS to its current stance of Zero intolerance for military coups.
We in Ghana know the cost of instability at least to the exodus of our artisans and professionals and the empty of teachers from our schools,” he stressed.

He observed that the instability of our neighbourhood has led to the influx of refugees into our country, urging that,”We should be unapologetic about campaigning for stable democratic governments in our Region.”

He continued that,”We do not want to be an island of peace and stability in a region of turmoil. We don’t aspire to be prosperous in the midst of wants and poverty. We want a stable and prosperous Ghana in a stable and prosperous Region.

We should use our chairmanship and membership of ECOWAS to advance these goals.”
