Covid-19 can be contracted through the eyes; protect them-Doctor warns

The Western Regional Director of Veterinary Service, Dr. Simon Gbene, has asked the members of the general public to protect their eyes as it is a  medium through which one can contract the deadly coronavirus.

Dr. Simon Gbene mentioned the nose, mouth and the eyes as mediums through which one can contract the deadly coronavirus.

He, however, expressed dissatisfaction in the fact that, most publications concentrate on the wearing of nose masks disregarding the eyes as a medium of through which one can contract the virus.

Dr. Simon Gbene made the statements while speaking to host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive Wednesday Morning.

“ If one wears a mask to protect the nose and mouth and comes into contact with a carrier of the virus who isn’t protected, when the saliva of the carrier comes into contact with the person’s eyes, he or she can contact the virus,” he added.

Dr. Simon Gbene encouraged the use of face shields in addition to the nosemasks to avoid contracting the virus through the eyes.

Similarly, Director of Health Promotions at the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Aboagye Dacosta, says a strict adherence to social distancing, wearing of masks and handwashing protocols are the surest way to fight the deadly coronavirus.

“We keep repeating the need for everyone to observe the safety protocols, because is the surest way to help fight the virus. All we need to do is to just observe the protocols. In August 2020 when the compliance to the protocols was very high, we all saw what happened, we recorded less cases. The Ghana Health Service (GHS) embarked on series of education which seemed to have fallen on deaf ears. The Covid-19 figures are the manifestations of the disregard for the protocols,” he added.

Ghana has recorded 675 new cases of the coronavirus pandemic, bringing the total number of active cases to 6,938 as of today 10th February 2021.

The death toll is pegged at 482.
