Driver committing suicide over sales claim 'fishy'- GPRTU

National Chairman for Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Kwame Kumah, says although the death of a trotro driver at Alajo is unfortunate, he believes there is more to the death than a GHC900 debt.

The deceased whose name was given as Sampson Kwaku Ayisi, 61, allegedly committed suicide at Alajo, a suburb of Accra.

The sad incident occurred Thursday at Alajo Down Town, close to the Virtue International School.

The late driver, who was married with three children, was found hanging in the kitchen by his wife Thursday morning.

Wife of the deceased, Madam Lydia Wiafe who spoke to Atinka FM stated that she suspects her husband took his own life because it was becoming difficult for him to raise money to settle a GHC900 debt.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka am Drive, National GPRTU Chairman, Kwame Kumah said there is more to the death of the driver , adding that  per the GPRTU guidelines, drivers have the liberty to return cars over failure to meet sales.

According to him, the GPRTU guidelines even mandates car owners who forcefully terminate their drivers' contract to pay a three months’ salary  as compensation.

“It is possible that other factors such as pressure from the family or elsewhere forced him to take his life and not the alleged debt”,he  said.
