Two driver unions, The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the True Drivers Union Association have clashed over the recent increase in transport fares.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced that commuters should expect an increment in transport fares from Saturday, February 26th 2022.

Another union, the True Drivers Union Association also announced a 30% increment in transport fares effective Friday February 17th 2022.

True Drivers say the decision is to save transport businesses from collapsing given the frequent upward adjustments in fuel prices.

Speaking to host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Spokesperson for True Drivers Union Association, Yaw Barimah, said the 30% increment will help heave the burdens off drivers.

Meanwhile, GPRTU says it is currently engaging government on what percentage the upward adjustment should be.

The Public Relations Officer for The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Imoro Abbas, who also spoke to Kaakyire Ofori Ayim said the other unions rushed in declaring the 30% increment in transport fares.

He added that the leadership of the GPRTU will meet government again since disagreements over the percentage increments have resulted in most of their meetings ending inconclusively.

“We asked for a 30 per cent increment, finally we were down to 20 per cent but government stuck to 10 percent of which we asked for more. Fortunately for us, there has been another upward adjustment of prices at the fuel pumps. So next week, we are going back and with what is happening now, when we go into the meeting, we will get a good rate for our people,” He added.
