E-levy: IMF is also a bad option – Kwesi Pratt tells NDC

debt exchange

The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwasi Pratt Jnr., has asked the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to desist from asking Ghana to return to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for financial assistance.

This comment by the social commentator comes after the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, suggested to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to go to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for support.

He noted that the IMF is capable and willing to support Ghana to deal with its fiscal challenges but with conditionalities.

Aseidu Nketia’s comment is as a result of the party’s opposition to the yet-to-be- approved E-levy.

In an interview with host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwasi Pratt Jnr., revealed that going back to the International Monetary Fund is not the solution to the current economic woes.

According to Kwasi Pratt, Ghanaians faced hardships when Ghana went to the IMF for financial aid in the 80s.

He added that the country’s national currency was devalued by more than 30,000 percent over the period.

”They [NDC] should stop making those statements that we should go the IMF. I get annoyed when I hear that statement. What has been the results of the previous IMF so-called financial support? Who said IMF is the solution to Ghana’s economic crises?. There is no solution there. So, the NDC should stop saying we should go the IMF. ” Pratt told Kaakyire Ofori Ayim.
