According to the Electoral Commission, Atinka FM’s Philip Appiah Kubi, also known as Roman Fada, cannot replace Akua Donkor as the Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) flagbearer.
According to the EC, Roman’s Fada disqualification was due to some inconsistencies, and despite having adequate opportunity to remedy the abnormalities, the GFP failed to do so.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, EC chief Mensa revealed that aspects of Roman Fada’s papers were determined to be “illegitimate” under the nation’s electoral regulations, excluding him from the upcoming election.
This event has created new challenges for the GFP, which had already suffered a huge setback with the unexpected death of its founding leader and original flagbearer, Akua Donkor, on October 15.
The EC noticed various flaws that went beyond simple clerical errors.
Jean Mensa underlined that the EC is constrained by its obligation to preserve election integrity and hence cannot accept documents that have significant legal difficulties, despite of the GFP’s efforts to rectify them.
The EC Chair reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to an open and lawful election process, emphasizing that adhering to these principles is critical to sustaining public trust.
