Egypt: Journalists mark African Cultural Day

Participants of the 58th Training Course for Young African Journalists marked African Cultural Day on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 in Egypt as part of activities drawn for the training.

On the day, the participants, clad in their native attires did a presentation on the various cultures in their respective countries.

From Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Chad, Morocco, Congo Brazzaville, Egypt, and Tanzania, different cultures were displayed, to allow the participants to learn or know and appreciate other cultures.

One of the Ghanaian participants, who is Atinka Media Village’s Porcia Oforiwaa Ofori dressed like a Queenmother and spoke about Queenmothers, how they dress, their key roles in society, and their origin.

She also did a presentation of the popular ‘Dipo’ puberty rites, done by the people of Odumase Krobo in the Eastern Region with visuals.

Aside from that, Porcia also spoke about how attractive Ghana is when it comes to tourism, as well as the delicacies enjoyed by indigenes and tourists while Daily Graphic’s Emmanuel Ebo Hawkson spoke about the country’s history and the good natural resources it possesses.

The Nigerians also gave an insight into how the naming ceremony was done and their food, demonstrating how ‘Gari’ was a very important meal to Nigerians.

The Kenyans, clad beautifully in one of their traditional outfits also spoke about their clothes, how the men in the country sacrifice a lot for their women to make them happy, and ended with a dance that got all participants joining.

The Egyptians also spoke about spoke about the various traditions observed in their country and also brought one of their foods called Lupine which was served while soaked in water for participants to try it.

The Participant from Congo also clad in an African print dress with a bag hanging on her head demonstrated how women in farming went about their daily business, just to mention a few.

At the end of the training, all participants were able to pick a thing or two from their colleagues while most of them were awed by the beautiful African attire displayed by themselves.

Meanwhile, the Training Course for Young African Journalists in Egypt is organized by the Union of African Journalists (UAJ), in collaboration with the Supreme Council for Media Regulation.

This year’s training brought together 13 journalists from African countries including Ghana, Nigeria, Congo Brazzaville, Chad, Morocco, Tanzania, and Kenya, and five from Egypt.

The three-week training programme which is held every year is meant to build the capacities of journalists, enhance their skills and allow them to network with other Journalists on the African Continent to share ideas.
