Information reaching Atinkaonline.com is that about 300 acres of farmlands have been destroyed by elephants at Assin Nsabaah in the Assin South District of the Central Region with an estimated damage cost of GH¢70,000.
Elephants invasion in the town has been a yearly occurrence, where they migrate from their habitation in the forest reserve in the area to consume farm produce and destroy them just before the farmers harvest their crops.
However, their number increased and the damage caused was huge as compared to initial invasions.
The crops mainly affected are maize, rice, groundnut, millet plantain, etc.
The farmers are therefore appealing to benevolent organisations as a matter of urgency to support them with food and other livelihood items.
They urged authorities of the Ghana Forestry Commission of Game and Wildlife to help find a permanent solution for the menace.
One of the Farmers who’s farm was affected said the elephants destroyed a full acre of farm with maize, while they destroyed cocoa, plantain and cassava.
He said this was the third time the elephants had invaded the farm.
“We are calling on government to come to our aid because it is the only source of our livelihood. We have do not any other income, we use this to feed our families and now they have destroyed the plantain that I was going to sell to take care of my family, as an old man, how do I feed my family after this,” he cried.
