The Western Regional Director of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr Ganiyu Abdul says a concrete bridge built in a river near Ewusijoe by a church has contributed to floods in the Western Region.

Aside from building the bridge in the river, he said the church had encroached the land.

According to Mr. Ganiyu Abdul, the church, whose name he preferred not to disclose, purchased land behind the river and constructed a concrete bridge to allow access to the land.

Reports have it it rained continuously in the Western Region from Thursday to Sunday.

The rainfall experienced in the Western Region and its neighbouring areas led to the overflowing of several rivers, leaving numerous communities flooded.

It has also claimed the lives of three students who went out to swim and wash.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ama Gyenfa Ofosu Darkwa, Mr Ganiyu Abdul said NADMO was going to engage the church to investigate the matter in order to establish the truth and the way forward.

He confirmed that many residents have been displaced as a result of the floods, adding that over 1200 fowls have also died due to the floods.

However, he expressed worry over how Ghanaians keep quiet when they see someone doing something wrong, urging all to report it when they see someone doing something that will affect the whole community.

Aside from that, he said NADMO had received help to support victims of the floods.

Meanwhile, he stated that displaced residents had been transported to a school and would remain there for some time.
