A former Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency, Mr Daniel Kosi Ashiamah says it is a crime for the Government to extend the service of older men whose contracts have expired.

This was in relation to Col Kwadwo Damoah (RTD)’s contract which expired in October 2021 but was extended till his sack.

The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo directed the Commissioner of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Col Kwadwo Damoah (RTD) to leave office immediately and hand over to his Deputy.

This comes few days after the Special Prosecutor made a move to probe auctioned vehicles at the ports.

In a statement signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante, it was revealed the the contract of Col Kwadwo Damoah expired in October 2021.

“Following the expiration of your contract of service as Commissioner (Customs Division) of the Ghana Revenue Authority on 14th October, 2021, the President of the Republic has directed that effective Friday, 26th August, 2022, you hand over your duties and office to the acting Deputy Commissioner (Preventive service), Mr Seidu Iddrisu Iddisah who will act as the Commissioner (Customs Division) pending the President’s substantive appointment,” the President stated.

The President therefore thanked Col Kwadwo Damoah (RTD) for his service to the state and wished him well in his future endeavours.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Mr Daniel Kosi Ashiamah said keeping older men who were due for pension in office destroys the future of the youth since most of them are not getting employment.

“I will plead with government that giving an extension to old men in their office is a crime. We have to make this changes in the Constitution. It is a serious crime, someone is working, he clocks 60 years and he is still wants to be in the office till he is 70 years and the younger men are not getting work to do,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said Col Kwadwo Damoah would not have been sacked if he personally resigned or left office when his time was due.

Mr Daniel Kosi Ashiamah pleaded with older men who reach their pension age to leave their offices for the younger ones to also have the opportunity to occupy their spaces.

“When you are 60 years, go home, go home so that the younger ones can gain employment so that what is happening now will not repeat itself. If Col Damoah went home on his own, no one will give him any letter, now, his CV has been spoilt,”he added.
