Gay Bill: I’ll defend rights of minorities- Otchere-Darko

The former Executive Director of the Danquah Institute, Gabby Otchere-Darko, has declared his stance on the “Promotion Of Proper Human Sexual Rights And Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021’.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) kingpin in a tweet said he is against the “Promotion Of Proper Human Sexual Rights And Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021’ in Parliament.

He maintained that he will always defend the rights of minorities everywhere.

In a tweet, Mr. Otchere-Darko said, “I am against the anti-gay bill & not shy to say so. I am a proud Ghanaian who cherishes all that is good about our value systems, including tolerance.

“And, I will defend the right of minorities everywhere. I have the courage and a sense of justice to disagree with the majority,” Gabby Otchere-Darko said.

The ‘Promotion Of Proper Human Sexual Rights And Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021’,also called the gay bill which before parliament, seeks to unequivocally criminalize LGBTQI+ activities.

According to the anti gay bill, people of the same sex who engage in sexual intercourse are “liable on summary conviction to a fine of not less than seven hundred and fifty penalty units and not more than five thousand penalty units, or to a term of imprisonment of not less than three years and not more than five years or both.”

The anti gay bill also proposes that a person who, by use of media, technological platform, technological account or any other means, produces, procures, markets, broadcasts, disseminates, publishes or distributes a material for purposes of promoting an activity prohibited under the Bill, or a person uses an electronic device, the Internet service, a film, or any other device capable of electronic storage or transmission to produce, procure, market, broadcast, disseminate, publishes or distribute a material for purposes of promoting an activity prohibited under the Bill, commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a term of imprisonment of not less than five years and not more than ten years.

The Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs on Thursday November 11 2021 started the public hearing on the memos submitted by the public.

During the hearing, Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West , Ursula Owusu-Ekuful noted that the bill would go through changes before it is passed.

She added that just as with all other bills that eventually get passed by Parliament go through reviews, the anti-gay bill will also be subjected to the same treatment.

She also asked the Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (PCC), to rephrase their memo that was presented to Parliament on the bill.
