Veterans call on gov’t to increase allowance

The leaders of the Veterans Administration of Ghana (VAG) are calling on the Akufo-Addo led government to increase the monthly allowance for its members.

According to the association, an increase in the monthly stipends will improve the standard of living of their members.

In an interview with the media during during the 76th Remembrance Day Service held in Kumasi on Thursday, 11 November 2021, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of VAG, Ex-Warrant Officer One (WO1) George Appiah called on government to pay particular attention to the health needs of its members.

He revealed that most of the members are bedridden and have become burdens on their families as monies to foot their bills are unavailable.

According to Ex-Warrant Officer One (WO1) George Appiah, the few of them who are not bed ridden are also spending their allowances on their wards education and utility bills.

“Our concerns are many, especially on health. Most of our people are not well. Some of them are bedridden now but where’s the money to take care of them?…The government doesn’t mind us. The little that he’s taking, he uses the same thing to pay for his medical bills. We want the government to raise our standard of living, especially on health and education,”

“Most of us are not well and our children’s education, too, once you’re out, nobody cares for you. Concerning our monthly allowance, they should improve it for us,” Ex-Warrant Officer One (WO1) George Appiah added.

He reiterated the need to increase their allowances citing utility bills as a major factor.

Veterans Association of Ghana

The Veterans Association of Ghana is an association of former servicemen and women of the Gold Coast Regiment and the Ghana Armed Forces.

It started originally as the Gold Coast Legion was formed in 1944 as a branch of what was then known as the British Empire Services League.

The legal basis of the association is currently bound by a 1974 decree of the National Redemption Council, the NRCD 285.

There are currently proposals for its overhaul but these are still in the discussion stages.

VAG formerly known as Veterans Association of Ghana is now Veterans Administration of Ghana.
