Ghana’s debt to GDP is 58% not 48% -Adongo

The Member of Parliament of Bolgatanga Central, Mr Isaac Adongo has counter argued that Ghana’s debt to gross domestic product (GDP) is not 48 per cent as the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia conveyed in a town hall meeting on Wednesday.

According to Adongo, Ghana’s debt to GDP was rather 58 per cent, exposing with figures that what the Vice president told Ghanaians was a lie.

Speaking at the lecture to counter the Bawumia’s state of economy in Accra, Adongo said that the figures which Bawumia gave to Ghanaians to indicate that the economy was doing well in the past two years, as compared to the Mahama Administration were all cooked up, adding that they were even outdated.

“They stopped our public debt in December 2018 because they knew they will deliver a lecture on the economy. For the domestic debt, they reported up to March 2019. They remembered that they had borrowed 3.7 billion which they added to their reserve and showed that the reserve was high, so me too I added it,” he said.

“And when it was added appropriately, based on the new series, our debt to GPD was 58 per cent but Bawumia claimed it was 48 per cent,” Adongo added.
