The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has taken steps to support the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to sensitise the public on the covid-19 disease.

The project, dubbed, “Mobilising Media in Fighting COVID-19,” seeks to encourage the public to go for their vaccines and still protect themselves, amongst others.

This initiative is being embarked on by journalists from different countries across the world.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, the Vice President for GJA, Mrs Linda Asante Agyei, noticed that communications by the GHS has gone down, so the GJA has taken it upon itself to help with the communications to encourage people to go for the vaccines.

“This initiative is being supported by Canada in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and has brought together journalists from 12 countries worldwide to go into the various communities to educate the general public, look out for issues that are COVID related. Now we are talking about vaccine hesitancy; some have taken the vaccine, but some have ignored it because of the misinformation in the media, but if we all go for the vaccine, we will all be safe. So, we have taken it upon ourselves to help get the people to have faith in the vaccine and go for it, “she said.

She added, “There is a new variant and it usually comes when the weather is cold.” Here in Ghana, it is also raining, and so this is the time that we need to sensitise people so that everyone will protect themselves. “

For her part, a representative of Journalists for Human Rights in Ghana, Zubaida Ismail, said although Ghana has fought well against COVID-19, scientists have also made it known that the virus changes with time, unlike measles where you can tackle it with time.

Just recently, she realised that another variant had revealed itself.

Zubaida Ismail again said although Ghana does not have any new variant currently, there is the need to protect ourselves.
