A final-year student at the University of Ghana recently admitted something that would have sounded scandalous a decade ago.
Most of his term papers over the past two years, he said, started with a conversation with an AI chatbot before he ever opened a textbook.
He is not alone, and he is not particularly ashamed of it either. Across campuses in Legon, KNUST, and private universities dotted around Accra and Kumasi, artificial intelligence tools have quietly become as common a study companion as WhatsApp group chats and past question banks.
The bigger question Ghana now has to grapple with is whether the certificate students walk away with still means what it used to.
For years, a university degree in Ghana signaled something fairly specific to employers. It meant a candidate had memorised a body of knowledge, survived rigorous exams, and demonstrated enough discipline to complete a multi-year programme.
AI tools have quietly eroded the first part of that equation. Why memorise case law, chemical formulas, or historical dates when a well-phrased prompt can retrieve, summarise, and even explain that information in seconds?
Some lecturers have responded by banning AI outright during take-home assignments, a policy that is proving nearly impossible to enforce.
Others have gone the opposite direction, redesigning assessments around oral defenses, in-class problem solving, and project-based work that AI can assist with but not fully replace.
This shift is not unique to Ghana, but it lands differently here.
Ghanaian universities have historically leaned heavily on lecture-based teaching and exam-heavy assessment, a model well suited to producing graduates who can recall information accurately but less suited to producing graduates who can apply it creatively under pressure.
AI exposes that gap ruthlessly. A student who can prompt an AI system effectively but cannot explain the underlying reasoning in a job interview will eventually be found out, sometimes painfully, in front of an employer.
Human resource managers in Accra’s growing tech and financial services sectors have started describing a strange disconnect.
Fresh graduates arrive with impressive certificates, sometimes with distinctions, yet struggle with tasks that require judgment rather than recall.
Meanwhile, self-taught young Ghanaians without formal degrees, some of whom learned coding or digital marketing through online platforms and local training hubs like those run by tech incubators in East Legon and Kumasi, are increasingly landing roles based on portfolios rather than certificates.
This does not mean degrees have become worthless. Regulated professions such as law, medicine, and engineering still require formal qualification, and there is no shortcut around that reality, nor should there be.
But in fields like marketing, software development, media, and general business administration, employers are placing growing weight on demonstrable skill over paper credentials.
A degree still opens doors, particularly for public sector jobs where certificates remain the primary filter, but it no longer guarantees competence in the eyes of many private employers.
If AI can handle recall, summarisation, and even basic analysis, universities arguably need to shift their focus toward the things AI still struggles with.
Critical thinking, ethical judgment, communication, collaboration, and the ability to ask good questions rather than simply answer them well.
Some Ghanaian institutions have begun experimenting in this direction, introducing more project-based courses, entrepreneurship modules, and partnerships with industry that expose students to real problems rather than textbook scenarios.
The University of Ghana’s growing emphasis on internships and KNUST’s engineering design projects are early signs of this shift, though critics argue the pace of change remains far too slow given how quickly the technology itself is moving.
There is also a resource question that cannot be ignored. Redesigning curricula around practical skills requires investment, smaller class sizes, better equipped labs, and lecturers trained to teach differently than they themselves were taught.
Many public universities in Ghana are already stretched thin, dealing with large lecture halls and limited funding.
Asking them to overhaul teaching methods without corresponding investment risks producing reforms that exist on paper but never quite reach the classroom.
Perhaps the fairest way to frame this debate is not to ask whether degrees have become less valuable in some absolute sense, but to ask what kind of value they now offer.
A degree earned purely through memorisation and recall, with no attention paid to practical application, is indeed losing ground fast, both in the job market and in genuine usefulness.
A degree that teaches students to think alongside AI rather than compete against it, to verify what a chatbot tells them, to apply theory to messy real-world problems, remains as valuable as ever, arguably more so.
For young Ghanaians currently weighing whether university is worth four years of tuition and opportunity cost, the honest answer is that it depends less on the institution’s name and more on what they do with the years they spend there.
AI has not killed the value of education. It has simply exposed, rather unforgivingly, which parts of that education were never really adding value in the first place.
