A Saudi returnee, Martha Kassum, has recounted what she described as a difficult experience in Saudi Arabia after travelling there in search of greener pastures.
Speaking on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie, hosted by Ekow Budu Sam, Martha alleged that an agent sold her as a domestic worker to a Saudi Arabian for SAR175,000.
According to her, her experience in the country was difficult, including alleged verbal and physical abuse. She claimed that her employer referred to her as “kalbah,” meaning dog, and alleged that a dead body wrapped in black polythene was hidden in her room.
Martha further alleged that she was beaten by police after refusing to continue working.
She said the situation became so unbearable that she prayed for death while in Saudi Arabia.
Martha explained that her decision to travel was partly motivated by her desire to make her mother proud.
“My mother was my weakness. I wanted to impress my mother,” she said.
She also alleged that she and other foreign workers attempted to get themselves arrested and deported after becoming desperate to leave the country.
According to Martha, they pleaded with the police to arrest and deport them, but the officers allegedly told them they knew the workers were deliberately trying to get deported and asked them to stop.
She said subsequent attempts to secure their deportation also failed.
Despite the difficulties, Martha said the experience strengthened her faith.
“My experience in Saudi Arabia gave me more hope that there is God,” she said.
