KNUST disturbances: Students' safety paramount – NUGS

The President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Frank Amoakohene, says the safety of students is paramount at the moment following recent happenings at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

KNUST students let by the SRC embarked on a supposed peaceful demonstration against what they described as brutalities by the University authorities.

The peaceful demonstration, however, turned chaotic as some distressed demonstrators smashed louvres, billboards, windscreens of parked vehicles, as well as other University properties.

18 students have been arrested in connection with the issue and are currently assisting the police in investigations.

Speaking on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Ekourba Gyasi, President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Frank Amoakohene explained amidst the ongoing investigations by the police, NUGS as a student body will make sure that  students are safe.

He noted that NUGS is putting measures in place to make sure that the indiscriminate abuse meted out to  students by the security persons on campus will be solved.

“Students' security is paramount to NUGS and we want to be assured of the safety of our students. The residential policy of the University will also be looked at and renegotiated for the betterment of both parties,” he added.

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is also the Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has also summoned the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kwabena Obiri Danso, students’ leadership as well as other relevant stakeholders over the disturbance.
