KNUST unrests: Calls for VC’s dismissal misplaced – UTAG

General Secretary for the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Dr. Samul Boadi Kusi, has described calls  for the dismissal of the Vice Chancellor for the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Professor Kwabena Obiri Danso, as misplaced.

KNUST students let by the SRC embarked on a supposed peaceful demonstration against what they described as brutalities by the University authorities.

The peace demonstration, however,  turned chaotic as some distressed demonstrators smashed louvres, billboards, windscreens of parked vehicles, as well as other University properties.

Eighteen students, have arrested in connection with the issue and are currently assisting the police in their investigations.

Following the disturbances, there has been calls by some persons for the VC to either be dismissed or resign.

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG)  have all called for  the VC's head.

In an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, General Secretary for the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Dr. Samul Boadi Kusi, stated that the Vice Chancellor only heads the University management and only a member of the University which takes decisions for the school.

He added that if students have challenges with the implementation of council decisions, there is the need to go through the appropriate channel for reviews.

“Calls for the VC’s dismissal or resignation are misplaced. The VC is only implementing decisions of the University and calls for dismissal are wrong. We will be setting a bad precedent should the VC be asked to step aside. If we don’t take care it will be a routine for other students in the other higher institutions since they will be  emboldened  by the fact that VC, or  heads of these institutions  can easily be dismissed ”, he fumed.
