The Child Health Department of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has commissioned a new library and playground, dubbed “Awo’s Nest,” to support the mental well-being, learning and recreational needs of children receiving medical care.
The facility is intended to provide a safe and nurturing environment where paediatric patients can read, learn, play and maintain a sense of normalcy while undergoing treatment.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Head of the Child Health Department, Professor Catherine Segbefia, expressed appreciation to the partners and organisations whose contributions made the project possible.
She said Awo’s Nest goes beyond providing a physical space, offering young patients an opportunity to discover, imagine and dream through reading and outdoor play.
The Executive Director of Lifeline for Childhood Cancer Ghana, Madam Akua Sarpong, also highlighted the importance of collaboration in bringing the initiative to life.
She particularly acknowledged the Ghana Library Authority for donating about 1,300 books to stock the library.
According to her, the facility would serve as a therapeutic retreat for children undergoing prolonged medical treatment, allowing them to continue learning and experience moments of joy despite the challenges associated with their conditions.
The Technical Representative of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), Mr Eben Anuma, described the initiative as an important intervention that complements medical care.
He noted that while healthcare professionals focus on treating physical ailments, access to books and recreational activities can help nourish the minds of children, stimulate their imagination and promote emotional well-being.
Professor Lorna Awo Renner, a prominent advocate for paediatric oncology care after whom the facility was named, expressed appreciation to the project’s initiators and partners for their commitment to improving the hospital experience for children.
The commissioning ceremony ended with the official cutting of the tape to open Awo’s Nest, followed by a tour of the newly established library and outdoor playground by hospital officials, partners and invited guests.
