NALAG, Assembly Members Push for Extension of YEA-Zoomlion Contract

The President of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), Hon. Alfred Asiedu Adjei, along with some assembly members in the Greater Accra Region, are calling on government to extend the contract of waste management company Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s Oman Mu Nsem hosted by Nana Owoahene Acheampong, they argued that ending the contract could worsen sanitation issues across the country and potentially lead to outbreaks of diseases like cholera.

Hon. Asiedu Adjei clarified that the low wages of sweepers under the sanitation module are determined by government, not Zoomlion.

He added that the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), not Zoomlion, hires these workers, and that Zoomlion only pays them on behalf of the agency.

Daniel Omaboe, Assembly Member for Bubiashie and chairman of the Finance and Administration sub-committee of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, also appealed to government to renew the contract, stressing that the country lacks alternative waste management systems.

The call follows government’s announcement that it would not renew the expired contract between YEA and Zoomlion. A letter from the Presidency dated June 11 confirmed that payments made after the contract’s expiry in 2024 would be audited, and any unauthorized disbursements recovered.

Meanwhile, Parliament’s Sanitation Committee defended Zoomlion, warning that failing to renew the contract could lead to job losses for thousands of Ghanaians.

Chairman of the Committee, MP John Kwabena Bless Oti, also invited journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni to share his findings following his criticism of Zoomlion’s operations.

Zoomlion Ghana Limited has since clarified that its contract with YEA ended naturally in September 2024 after an extension and was not cancelled by government.

Founded in 2006, Zoomlion has received several awards for its contributions to sanitation and employment in Ghana. Leaders say continued government support is essential to keep Ghana clean and safe.
