NPP communicator who was lashed 40 times denies insulting queen mother

The young New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communicator who was given 40 lashes for allegedly insulting Queen Mother of the Drobo Traditional Area, Nana Yaa Ansuaa has denied insulting the lady.

The victim, Israel Kofi Baffour Asare, was allegedly given 40 lashes for using unpleasant words on the queen after the 2020 election.

But reacting to the allegations on Atinka TV’s Midday News, he said, “I haven’t insulted anyone. I did not insult the woman because I come from that palace. If you insult someone in Ghana, it is a criminal offence that can be taken to court so if she feels I truly insulted her, she would have brought the police to arrest me .”

The victim explained further that, “The Drobo Queen Mother is a Board Member at YEA and Lands Commission and she was appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. After the election, the preferred candidate of the President lost his seat, and when we investigated it, we found out that the Queen Mother and other persons campaigned against the candidate, Yaw Maama Afful.”

“So we said that if Nana Addo appointed you and you campaigned against his preferred parliamentary candidate, then you do not deserve to be on that board and we suggested that the President should removed all these saboteurs from the various government positions. We have never met, I have never spoken about her on radio. This is what we said at the press conference we held. so I have never insulted her,” he said.

Kofi Baffour added that it was so obvious that Nana Yaa Ansuaa had issues with the said parliamentary candidate, saying that the Drobo palace has never liked Yaw Afful.

Narrating his ordeal, the victim who is also a JHS Teacher in the area said after close of school, he was informed that he had visitors and he directed them to meet him out where he was.

He said,”Three men came to me and informed me that I was needed at the Drobo Palace. One threatened to kill anyone who speaks ill of the Palace and before I could speak or resist, they started beating me and pulled me on the street to the palace.”

The victim said five people were involved in the beating, adding that two held him for the three to do the lashing.

He added that,”There were four people there, three were young and including an old man. They went for canes and started beating me without asking me any question. It was after three minutes one old man asked them to stop.”

Meanwhile, he could not tell his next action and that of the NPP Communications team.

The Queen Mother on the other hand has also remained silent on the issue.
