Only 2 million Ghanaians pay tax -Finance Minister

The Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta has hinted that about 2 million persons in Ghana are paying taxes out of the 30.8 million population.

Reading the 2022 Budget statement in parliament on Wednesday, he said, “Out of the population of 30.8 million, only 2,364,348 persons are bearing the burden of the entire population as tax payers as at August 2021.”

He said the statistics were poor on the part of Ghanaians, underscoring the need to change the narrative.

He said out of the registered voter population of 17,027,941 as at 2020, only 1,643,899 persons are captured by SSNIT as active contributors to tier one pension, while 2.1 million were captured as active contributors to tier 2 as at June 2021.

He said only 45,109 entities have registered as corporate tax payers, adding that only 54,364 persons are registered as self employed tax payers at the Ghana Revenue Authority, adding that only 136,198 are registered businesses at the Register General’s Department as at August 2021.
