Over-speeding has emerged as the leading cause of road accidents recorded in Ghana this year, Head of Corporate Affairs at the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Simbiat Wiredu, has disclosed.
According to her, although the country has recorded a reduction in road crashes, the situation remains a concern, particularly because of motorists’ continued disregard for speed limits.
Speaking on Atinka TV News with Thomas Onoma Koranteng, Ms Wiredu said the NRSA had set a target of achieving a 20 per cent reduction in road crashes this year, stressing that the target was still achievable.
She, however, called for a change in the attitude and behaviour of road users, particularly motorists who engage in excessive speeding.
Ms Wiredu noted that investments in modern road infrastructure alone would not be enough to reduce road crashes if drivers continued to speed recklessly.
“Even when we construct modern roads and people still over-speed, we will record more accidents,” she said.
She therefore urged motorists to exercise greater caution, obey speed limits and adopt responsible attitudes on the roads to help reduce fatalities.
Ms Wiredu also expressed sympathy to the families of victims of the road crash at Ofankor, which claimed 11 lives, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the need for greater responsibility and caution among road users.
She reiterated the NRSA’s commitment to reducing road crashes and fatalities, while urging all stakeholders and road users to contribute to making Ghana’s roads safer.
