Islam, Christianity have more similarities than differences –Bawumia

0

The Vice President of the Republic, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for increased acceptance of the many divergent religions in the country to safeguard the peace Ghana enjoys.

In particular, Vice President Bawumia is calling for greater tolerance and acceptance between the two largest religions in the country, Christianity and Islam, pointing out that the beliefs of the two religions have more similarities than differences.

“In fact many people don't realise that between Muslims and Christians there's actually more that unites us than divides us,” Vice President Bawumia noted at a special lecture organized to celebrate the 100th birthday of the National Chief Imam, His Eminence Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharabutu in Accra on Tuesday, April 23, 2019.

“We worship the same God, Allah, the same God. The God of Abraham, the God of Moses, the God of Isaac, the God of David; the same God that we all worship. We all believe in the virgin birth of Jesus. We both believe that Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary. We revere Mary so much that she's the only female who is mentioned directly by name in the Quran; the only female, and you have a whole chapter in the Qur'an, Suratul Mariam, which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

“Indeed, there are more mentions of Mary in the Holy Quran than in the whole New Testament.”

Vice President Bawumia continued:

“We all believe in the miracles of Jesus Christ. We believe as Muslims he talked when he was in the cradle. We believe the miracles he performed to give sight to the blind and so on. And as Muslims and Christians we all believe that Jesus will come back before the day of judgement, to defeat the false prophet or the anti-Christ. We all share that common belief as Muslims and Christians.

“But what is also more important is that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) told all of us as Muslims that amongst all the faiths that we have, we as Muslims should be closest to the Christians. That is what he told us, that we as Muslims should be closest to the Christians, because they are good people. So today, if you are a Muslim and you say you don't like Christians it means you don't understand Islam. And if you are a Christian and you say you don't like Muslims then you don't understand Christianity.”

Vice President Bawumia warned against religious extremism arising from a misinterpretation of religions, saying deviants and anti-social elements take advantage of such postures to perpetrate crime.

“There is more that unites us, the two religions, than divides us. But we allow people like the terrorists to hide under the cloak of religion to try to divide us. But we in Ghana, we are lucky. We are lucky we have people like Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharabutu to continue teaching us the right way.

“Our colleagues from other countries are often astounded by the level of religious tolerance in Ghana. Our answer to them is simple: we have a National Chief Imam who is extremely knowledgeable, but also humble and a champion of inter-faith dialogue and peace. We also tell them we have Christian leaders who are receptive to the National Chief Imam's gesture of respect to the Christian Community.

“As Muslims and Christians, let us not take the freedom and peace we enjoy for granted. They were achieved through the concerted efforts of noble men like Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu and the Christian leaders we have in the country. At our various levels, let us emulate this beautiful example of humility, compassion and tolerance exhibited by the National Chief Imam” the Vice President adviced.

3 Takoradi kidnapped girls in Accra

The three kidnapped girls from Takoradi have been rescued according to DGN online

They are reportedly undergoing medical examination at an undisclosed health facility in Accra.

The girls, Ruth Quayson, Priscilla Blessing Bentum and Priscilla Koranchie are believed to have been kidnapped between August 2018 and January 2019.

The main suspect in the kidnapping, Sam Udoetuk Wills is currently before the Takoradi Magistrate Court after he escaped from jail in December 2018 following his first arrest.

Over the weekend, parents of the girls demonstrated in Takoradi, in demand for their children.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service recently said it had identified the whereabouts of the three girls.

“After months of investigations together with the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), the whereabouts of the three victims are now known,” the Director General in-charge of the CID, Deputy Commissioner of Police, (DCOP) Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo Danquah said at a news conference.

She said: “we are working together with other stakeholders to bring them back safely.”

But she later declined to give further details. Her refusal to disclose the whereabouts of the girls caused the public to criticize her with some even doubting if indeed the security agency knew about the location of the girls.

Israel to name new town on Golan after Trump: Netanyahu

0

Israel said on Tuesday it would name a new community on the Golan Heights after U.S. President Donald Trump as an expression of gratitude for his recognition of its claim of sovereignty over the strategic plateau.

Israel captured the Golan from Syria in a 1967 war and annexed it, in a move not recognized internationally. The United States broke with other world powers last month when Trump signed a decree recognizing Israeli sovereignty there.

“All Israelis were deeply moved when President Trump made his historic decision,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a video statement made on the Golan.

He added that, after the Jewish Passover festival, he would “bring to the government a resolution calling for a new community on the Golan Heights named after President Donald J. Trump.”

Trump’s Golan move followed his decision in December 2017 to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, breaking with decades of U.S. policy over the status of a city contested by the Palestinians.

Israel has said separately that, in appreciation of the U.S. president, it intends to name a proposed train station near Jerusalem’s Western Wall after him.

Coca-Cola is making a big push into coffee

0

Coca-Cola isn’t new to coffee, but the global beverage giant is planning on making a big push into the industry this year.

The company is releasing Coca-Cola Coffee in more than 25 markets around the world by the end of 2019.

“Coke Coffee was designed to reach consumers during specific occasions and channels like the mid-afternoon energy slump at work,” CEO James Quincey told analysts Tuesday.

The drink, which blends Coke with coffee, has slightly less caffeine than a normal cup of coffee but more than a can of the soda.

The move comes as consumers have shifted from drinking soda to choosing less sugary options, like bottled water and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar. Coca-Cola Coffee contains less sugar than a Coke of the same size.

The drink also allows the company to capitalize on a trend that is working: coffee. Ready-to-drink coffee is the fastest growing segment in the coffee category, growing 31% in 2016 and 2017, according to Mintel. Chilled coffee drinks like cold brew are also growing in popularity with consumers. From 2013 to 2017, cold coffee grew at least 10% annually in the U.S., Mintel research found. The trend is less appreciated by European consumers, who tend to experiment less.

So far, Coke’s coffee business has largely been focused in Japan, where canned coffee has been a popular in vending machines for decades. The Atlanta-based company’s Georgia Coffee brand has surpassed $1 billion in sales and expanded to other Asian countries.

Coke first tried to introduce coffee to its namesake brand back in 2006. The company discontinued the short-lived Coca-Cola Blak two years later.

In 2017, Coke took another whack at it, introducing Coca-Cola Plus Coffee in Australia. The following year, the company brought it to Asia for more tests after retooling the formula to heighten the coffee aroma.

“The early results are very promising, delivering incremental growth for the Coca-Cola brand with very little cannibalization,” Quincey told analysts in July.

The company also plans to start selling ready-to-drink Costa coffee products in European markets during the second quarter. Coke purchased the British coffee chain for $5.1 billion including debt and closed the deal in January.

“We’re in early days of working out exactly how we’re going to bring to life the synergy plans for greater revenue growth and profit growth,” Quincey said on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street. ”

Coke’s stock rose 2 percent in morning trading Tuesday after the company reported earnings and revenue that beat Wall Street’s estimates. The beverage giant earned 48 cents per share from continuing operations, beating the 46 cents per share expected by analysts surveyed by Refinitiv. Revenue rose 5% to $8.02 billion, topping expectations of $7.88 billion.

“The video is disheartening and I must say that I am sad. What pleasure will you derive from sleeping with a 10-year old girl. I have this video and some other rape stories on my desk, I don’t know what goes into the judgement of cases like this, but I will meet the chief Justice and I am sure we will make head ways…”, she said.
