Man caged 36 years for kidnapping

0

A 24-year-old Nigerian, Isaac Aigbona, has been sentenced to 36 years in prison for his role in the kidnapping and robbing of a 46-year-old businesswoman at Mile Seven in Accra.
Aigbona pleaded guilty to four counts of conspiracy to rob, robbery, causing harm and kidnapping and was sentenced on his own plea by the Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh.
He was, however, discharged on the count of conspiracy because his suspected accomplice, identified only as Charles, is yet to be arrested to face the law.

More trouble for Aigbona
The convict, together with Charles, attacked the businesswoman, Mrs Atlanta Frimpong, at her residence, robbed her of her items, kidnapped her and also hit the head of her houseboy with a heavy metal, making him unconscious.
The houseboy, Emmanuel Botchway, 22, was admitted to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, but later died of the injuries he sustained.
In view of the death of Botchway, the police have reviewed the case docket and have further charged Aigbona with murder.
He is expected to appear before a district court for committal proceedings, a prelude to a murder trial at the High Court.

Robbery
The prosecutor, Inspector Samuel Ahiabor, told the court that Aigbona, who hawks SIM cards in Accra, and Charles laid ambush in the house of Mrs Frimpong and held her hostage at about 9:30 p.m. on April 1, 2019 when she returned home from work.
They tied her hands and legs, while pointing an implement that looked like a pistol and a kitchen knife at her, and demanded that she give them all the money in her bag and any other money in the house or they would kill her.
The victim handed her handbag, which contained GH¢1,000 and $1,400 to the robbers, who also removed her gold engagement ring and necklace.

Attack on houseboy, kidnapping

While they were demanding more money, Botchway entered the compound and after threatening him with the kitchen knife, he was made to join his employer in the sitting room.
While in the sitting room, Aigbona hit Botchway on the head with a heavy metal which rendered him unconscious.
The two kidnappers then blindfolded Mrs Frimpong and forced her into her Nissan Murano 4×4 vehicle with her hands tied at the back. They also took some personal effects of the victim’s husband.
They drove her and took her to a bush around ‘Amasaman Agric’ where they called the husband of their victim, who was in Kumasi, and demanded a ransom in exchange of his wife.
A police patrol team chanced on the vehicle which was parked close to the bush, leading to the arrest of Aigbona while his accomplice escaped with the money, jewellery and other personal effects of the victim.

No peace for kidnappers
Meanwhile, the Accra Regional Police Operations Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ACP), Mr Kwesi Ofori, has said the police will employ all measures to bring the persons behind the surge in kidnapping in the country to book.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic, he said the Accra Regional Police Command had in less than a month rescued two kidnapped victims through its targeted operations towards kidnappers in the region.
The rescued victims include the Consular General and Head of Mission of Estonia to Ghana, Mr Nabil Makram Bosbous, who was kidnapped last Thursday, April 18, 2019, and Mrs Frimpong, who was kidnapped by Aigbona and Charles on April 1, 2019 from her house at Mile Seven in Accra.
“As part of the measures to stop kidnapping, we are employing effective policing, targeted operations towards kidnappers and community engagements and we have also started an anti-kidnapping campaign led by the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintend of Police Mrs Effia Tenge. We know this will help us win the war,” he said.

Foreign

“Kidnapping for ransom is a foreign-related crime in our country.

It has not been part of Ghana’s criminal history. We have realised that it is being perpetrated by foreigners and the police will do whatever is within their power to rid the country of such criminals,” he said.
He called on the public to support the police by providing useful information that would lead to the arrest of such perpetrators.
Citing the case of the kidnappers who held Mr Bosbous hostage in a rented apartment, he said the police “are working around the clock to arrest the three suspects behind the kidnapping.”

He advised landlords to abide by the rent control and other laws before renting out apartments to people and also take the details of their tenants, including their photographs.
“Landlords would be held responsible in such criminal cases. They must know their tenants and when the tenants lead suspicious lives they should be the first to inform the police.
We have invited the landlord who rented his house to the three Nigerians who kidnapped the Consular General and Head of Mission of Estonia to Ghana,” he stated.

Free SHS has been good for the North and will be good for all of Ghana -Bawumia

0

The Vice President of the Republic, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated that the Free SHS policy introduced by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is a transformational policy meant to build the human capital of the nation for future development. Government expenditure on free SHS should therefore be seen as a necessary investment for the future of Ghana.

Speaking at Obo Kwahu in the Eastern Region on Saturday, 20th April, 2019, Dr. Bawumia noted that at independence the North negotiated for and obtained an agreement from the Nkrumah government to introduce free education in the North. This policy benefited northern Ghana significantly.

“I am a beneficiary of free education in the north, just like many members of the NDC including former President Mahama, and I am absolutely convinced that at this stage of our development, Free SHS should be enjoyed by every Ghanaian SHS student”, Vice President Bawumia emphasised.

“I therefore find it rather difficult to understand that people like President Mahama who are direct beneficiaries of free education in the north will seek to curtail its implementation across the country”.

Dr. Bawumia stated that Free SHS is definitely expensive but it would be more expensive for the country to have large numbers of people who are uneducated. Our mission should therefore be to help grow and manage the resources of Ghana in a manner that will enable us provide and sustain this transformational policy.

Since the September 2017 nationwide roll-out of the programme designed to provide free senior high school education to all Ghanaian youth, former President Mahama in particular and the NDC in general have questioned the rationale behind the programme, arguing that it was a misplaced priority that would have dire consequences on the nation’s finances.

Ironically, former President Mahama and several leading lights of the NDC are beneficiaries of the decades-old free senior high school education policy for northern Ghana, but have never advocated for its cancellation due to financial challenges.

Dr. Bawumia noted that “Free SHS cannot be the problem. We are implementing so many programmes designed to reduce the hardships on Ghanaians, like massive reductions in electricity, implementation of the One Village One Dam, One District One Warehouse policies, while also increasing Capitation Grant and allowances for People Living with Disability,” the Vice President stated.

“We have reduced import duties on goods and cars, engaged 100,000 graduates under NABCO, cancelled fees for postgraduate medical training, restored book and research allowances for lecturers, created jobs and stopped the freeze on recruitment in the public sector. Over 350,000 people have been recruited.

“But, even without Free SHS, your government cancelled teacher training allowances, cancelled nursing training allowances, cancelled import duty waivers for health professionals, and increased taxes on every conceivable good such as condoms, ambulances and cutlasses. You failed to provide employment for thousands of qualified graduates.

“We (NPP) are able to implement all of these policies alongside Free SHS because we are growing and managing the economy in a prudent manner. All Ghanaian youth deserve free senior high school education, and Nana Akufo-Addo’s government will continue to deliver it

Even Without Free SHS You Could Not Deliver – Bawumia to Mahama

0

The Vice President of the Republic, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has described the claim by former President John Dramani Mahama that the nationwide roll-out of the Free Senior High School (FSHS) programme is causing hardships as untenable and not supported by the facts.

Dr. Bawumia noted the hardships and suffering of Ghanaians during the tenure of the former president and pointed out that “even without Free SHS, the Mahama government cancelled teacher training allowances, cancelled nursing training allowances, cancelled import duty waivers for health professionals, and increased taxes on every conceivable good including bicycles, condoms, ambulances and cutlasses. You brought the NHIS to its knees and returned health care to a cash and carry system. You failed to provide employment for thousands of qualified graduates”.

Speaking at a rally organised by the youth wing of the governing NPP at Obo Kwahu in the Eastern Region as part of activities marking this year’s Easter festivities on Saturday, 20 April 2019, Dr. Bawumia noted that notwithstanding the implementation of free SHS the government has implemented a large number of broad socially inclusive policies which the former president was unable to deliver because of the poor management of the economy under his watch.
Despite Free SHS, the Government of Nana Akufo-Addo has been able to:

•    Reduce electricity tariffs for households and industries
•    Restore teacher training allowances
•    Restore nursing training allowances
•    Expand LEAP
•    Expand School Feeding
•    Abolish or reduce 17 taxes
•    Reduce import duties
•    Provide jobs for over 350,000 people in the public sector
•    Provide jobs for 100,000 graduates under the Nation Builders Corps
•    Double the capitation grant to basic schools
•    Increase the proportion of the DACF paid to persons with disabilities by 50%
•    One village one dam is on course
•    One district one factory is on course
•    One constituency one ambulance is on course
•    Etc.

“We have been able to implement all of these policies and programmes and still implement Free SHS, because we have managed the economy better. The issue is therefore not Free SHS but the competence in managing the economy which allows for the implementation of forward-looking programmes and policies” Vice President Bawumia declared.

Vice President Bawumia had earlier taken part in a massively attended health walk organised by the youth wing of the party, led by Henry Nana Boakye.

Other speakers at the rally included the National Organiser of the NPP, Sammy Awuku; National Youth Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye; Eastern Region Minister and MP for Nkawkaw, Hon Eric Kwakye Darfuor; Minister of State at the Ministry of National Security and MP for Abetifi, Hon Brian Acheampong; Deputy Minister of Finance and MP for Atiwa East, Hon Abena Osei Asare; Deputy Minister for Works and Housing and MP for Cape Coast North, Hon Barbara Asher Ayisi; Eastern Region NPP Chairman Kingston Akomeng Kissi; Eastern Region Secretary Jeff Konadu, and other senior party officials.

Sacked High Court judge found dead in his Sakumono residence

0

Mr Ringo Cass Akurugu Azumah, a High Court Judge who was sacked from office, has been found dead in his house in Sakumono Estates, Tema.
The body was found on Good Friday and neighbours believe he died about a week ago due to the near decomposition of the body.
The police had to force his door open after reports of foul odour in the area.
A resident, who sells bags few meters away from his flat, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that on Friday, April 19 at about 1 a.m, he saw liquid seeping from the last floor of the flat where the deceased lived alone.
He said the pungent odour from the seepage, with an accompanying putrid smell was unmistakable of that of a decaying animal.

Corroborating his claim, a Sanitation Officer, who had earlier on knocked on the door of the deceased to collect his monthly fee but heard no response after several attempts, unusual of the occupant, explained that “the overpowering smell emanating from that particular entrance got me alarmed especially because the man lived alone in the house and his car was parked outside.”
He said, “I swiftly rode to the police station, few meters away from the flat, to make an official complaint of my suspicion”.

Another resident who pleaded anonymity, speaking to the GNA at the scene, expressed shock at the passing of the judge, who he said seemed somewhat isolated and was seldom seen around the neighborhood.
“The only time you will spot him is when he had to wash his car in the early hours in the day and would hardly even take a walk around,” he added.
On those instances, he said the former judge came across as rather quiet and reserved and was always hesitant to respond to greetings from neighbours or anyone.
This, he said, made him feel there was something wrong with him because of the rare gesture he sometimes showed towards residents, most of whom knew little or nothing at all about him.
The Public Relations Officer, Accra Regional Police Command, Effia Tenge confirming the incident to the GNA said, her outfit on April 19, 2019, received information of the death of Justice Ringo Cass Akurugu Azumah in his apartment in Sakumono from a complainant.
She said immediately, a team of Crime Scene experts from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in Accra were dispatched to the scene where “a male adult about 60 years was lying dead”.
Effia Tenge further stated that, after careful inspection of the body, with no marks of violence detected, the body was deposited at the Police Hospital morgue in Accra for preservation pending autopsy to ascertain the cause of death.
Meanwhile, it would be recalled that former President John Mahama directed the removal of Mr Ringo Cass Akurugu Azumah from office as justice of the High Court on grounds of stated misbehavior and incompetence.
The former President acted upon a recommendation by the Judicial Council.
But sympathizers believe that he was a victim of a purge of the Judiciary in the wake of alleged corruption scandals which nearly marred the image of third organ of government.
