About 1,400 vehicles have been destroyed as a fire engulfed a multi-storey car park next to the Echo Arena in Liverpool, Sky News reports

Crews rescued two dogs from one of the vehicles inside car park as they battled the blaze, the fire service said. They were thought to be the only animals in the park at the time.

The area has a capacity of 1,600 cars – and 1,400 vehicles were estimated to be parked at the time of the blaze, with all of them destroyed.

Liverpool’s mayor, Joe Anderson, said the blaze started in a Land Rover on the third level of the multi-storey car park – and police believe this caused other vehicles to ignite.

There were periodic explosions and flames shooting up the outside of the building as the cars inside burned.

Merseyside Police have described the fire as accidental, adding: “We believe that all vehicles parked in the car park have been destroyed and advise owners to contact their insurance companies.

No one has been seriously injured, but crews still trying to contain the blaze have been hampered by strong winds.

A reception centre has been set up nearby for people who are unable to get home

The huge blaze next to the Echo Arena, which is on the city’s waterfront, forced organisers to cancel the Liverpool International Horse Show.

Horses which were on the first level of the car park when the fire broke out were moved into the arena.

Nearby buildings – including some apartments – were evacuated because of smoke billowing from the fire.

Crews were first called to the car park at 4.42pm and were on scene eight minutes later.

Kasena/Nankana: Poor patient attitude running War Memorial Hospital blood bank dry

The head of laboratory at the War Memorial Hospital, Ramsey Bugri Anafo, has revealed that poor attitude of patients in replacing blood after recovery accounts for the hospital’s inability to maintain the needed amount of blood at the blood bank of the health facility to meet demand.

According to him, patients in good standing to replace blood at the blood bank mostly fail to do so after recovery. There’s also a challenge of others who receive blood but cannot make replacements for genuine reasons.

Speaking with Atinka News’s Senyalah Castro Cazo at a joint blood donation exercise with the ARISE Youth Group in the Kasena/Nankana East municipal Assembly, Mr Anafo described the attitude as very unfortunate and detrimental to the delivery of good health care services by the hospital’s blood bank as the lab continuously suffers blood shortages even at critical moments.

He also bemoaned the attitude of corporate agencies towards blood donation exercises in the region. He said these corporate agencies have paid little or no attention to a vital part of the hospital from which anyone can receive help at any day and point in time. This, he said on the back of the numerous challenges the hospital and similar groups such as the ARISE Group have had to face in pooling resources for mobile donation exercises.

He called for support from individuals and sector agencies in the municipality to help organize more of such blood donation exercises to enable the hospital’s laboratory meet its monthly issuance of about 400 units of blood to patients.

” we issue a lot of blood at the War Memorial Hospital to our clients. For instance, if you look at our monthly data that we compile, we issue a total number of about 300 to 400 units of blood. So it is very vital that we support exercises like this, individually or as groups or agencies, to help us stock the fridge so that we can give out blood anytime there’s the need, “Mr. Anafo said.

Raphael Kwarase, leader of the ARISE Group explained that the drive to partner with the hospital in the blood donation exercise was propelled by the need to help minimize the impact of frequent blood shortages at the hospital on patients. He noted that there is a huge gap in the number of blood transfusions carried out at the facility and its ability to readily make available the vital liquid.

He further stated that the hospital which is the principal health care provider in the municipality made about 1,200 blood transfusions in the past eleven months, a figure that translates to three patients a day. ” This a huge number that is challenging when you don’t have ready blood stock and we therefore need to work hard to achieve this” he added.

This year’s blood donation exercise had the support of many youth cliques in the municipal assembly. There were lots of refreshments, fun games for donors and musical performances from NeLo Gh and Carl Blingx.

ARISE is an action-driven youth group in Kasena/Nankana East that goes ” beyond the talk” with an objective of identifying and solving societal problems through strategic partnerships and network.

Statement: President Mahama was not late to Revolution Day event

Statement: President Mahama was not late to Revolution Day event

The Local Organising Committee of the 36th commemoration of the 31st December Revolution which came off successfully in Ho yesterday would like to settle the unfortunate issue of the arrival time of His Excellency former President John Dramani Mahama.

We wish to state emphatically from the outset that former President Mahama was not late to the Revolution Day event.

According to the statement, it should be noted that what transpired leading to the remarks of the Founder of the NDC and former President, Jerry John Rawlings was an apparent communication lapse. Former President Mahama’s Office was informed to arrive at 10am. It should be noted that Former President Mahama duly complied and in fact arrived earlier at 9:50am.

It must be well acknowledged that Former President Rawlings after having been informed of these facts, in a statesmanly manner, publicly corrected the impression he had created earlier and apologised to President Mahama.

It is the considered view of the LOC that an otherwise successful and well patronized Revolution Day event should not be marred by this blip.

The just observed 36th Revolution Day contrary to claims by our opponents of an imploding NDC has clearly showcased to the nation that the entire rank and file of the NDC is united under the umbrella and deeply committed to the principles of Probity, Accountability and Social Justice.

We take this opportunity to thank all comrades for your participation, support and contributions towards a very successful event.
Happy new year.

Signed,
Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah (MP)
Chairman, Local Organising Committee

It will be recalled that former President Rawlings at the event criticized ex President Mahama for keeping him waiting at functions, adding that official programmes are delayed in wait for Mr Mahama arrival before commencement.

“He has not learnt the lesson of how not to be late for functions. Each time they keep me waiting just because of him. Ladies and gentlemen, don’t worry he will learn it,” he said.

Banker enters NDC flagbearship race

Banker

A 42-year-old banker and businessman, Nurideen Iddrisu, has expressed strong interest in the flagbearship of the National Democratic Congress when nominations are opened eventually in 2018.

Mr Iddrisu, who founded Deen Petroleum Ghana Limited, says he comes in as a neutral personality with a unifying appeal to galvanise the support base of the party towards the attempt to wrest power from the governing New Patriotic Party.

At an encounter with the media in Wa last Friday,  the banker  said he arrived at the decision after wide consultations with various persons at different levels of the party’s structure across the country, and felt his candidature would give the party a formidable presence in the next election.

In the 35-minute interaction, he emphasised that his ambition was hinged on a vision “to see a nation in which all citizens would be empowered through education, good health and jobs,” and a mission “to lead a planned and sustained investment in people and infrastructure for the rapid creation of a sustainable economic development and empowered citizens”.

Impressive profile

Mr Iddrisu hails from Wa, capital of Upper West Region, and prides himself as being NDC at heart with years of activism in politics and experience in business and corporate management.

He was born in 1975, and schooled in Wa before obtaining ‘O’ Level and ‘A’ Level certificates at Achimota School in Accra.

The banker  has since also obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing and a Master of Business Administration in finance, both from the University of Ghana, Legon.

His working career in a relatively young life has crisscrossed various sectors of the local economy, with his impressive profile featuring a chequered experience in the petroleum industry especially.

Attired in flowing white and accompanied by only close associates, he expressed confidence in his own ability to turn delegates in his favour when the times comes, stressing that his engagements with the rank and file of the party had given him positive feedback about his new ambition to lead the NDC.

Party re-organisation

He stated, however, that he would comply with the party’s orders for any campaigning to be stayed until after the ongoing re-organisation efforts at all levels of the party’s structure was completed.

Indeed, the NDC has embarked on internal re-organisation following its electoral defeat in the 2016 polls, and despite subtle campaigning by a growing list of individuals, the virtual ban has muted the expected cacophony of campaign jingles and rhetoric.

Mr Iddrisu is the second prospective candidate so far from the Upper West Region to have expressed an interest to lead the NDC. Long serving Member of Parliament for Nadowli-Kaleo Constituency, Alban Bagbin, has earlier confirmed his interest in a similar interaction with the media in Wa.

But while Mr Bagbin and the other names, including President John Mahama, are established figures both within the party and on the national scale, Mr Iddrisu is daring to dine with the strong and mighty in an adventure that may turn heads in his direction in coming days.

Make June 4, December 31 public holidays– Asiedu Nketia

Make June 4

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia wants the June 4 Uprising and the December 31 Revolution to be instituted as public holidays.

According to him, the two memorable occasions in Ghana’s history are important than the proposed August 4 holiday by the NPP.
President Nana Akufo Addo and other NPP top officials recently proposed August 4 as public holiday,

Ghana’s first political party, the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) was formed on August 4 at Saltpond in the Central Region. Many NPP big shots believe the day paved the way for Ghana’s Independence on 6th March, 1957.  The proposal generated heated debate on the political landscape with some Ghanaians and members of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) accusing the NPP government of distorting history just to honour its forbearers.

However, speaking at Ho in the Volta Region to commemorate the 36th anniversary of the 31st December Revolution Sunday, Asiedu Nketia said “June 4th and 31st December did something that affected the governance of this country [and] we have all benefited from what the revolutions stood and still stands for,”

“If we make june 4 a holiday, it  will further the interest of Ghana if we choose to dedicate a day or two to remind everybody about the importance of probity, accountability and social justice,” he said.

Nuclear button is on my desk, says Kim

Nuclear button is on

North Korea‘s leader Kim Jong-un has said a nuclear launch button is “always on my table” and warned the US it will never be able to start a war.

In a televised new year speech, he said the entire US was within range of North Korean nuclear weapons, adding: “This is reality, not a threat.”

But he also offered a potential olive branch to South Korea, suggesting he was “open to dialogue”.
North Korea may also send a team to the Winter Olympics in Seoul, he said.

What is President Trump’s reaction?

When asked by reporters to respond to Mr Kim’s latest threats, US President Donald Trump said, “We’ll see, we’ll see”.
He was speaking at the sidelines of New Year’s Eve celebrations at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

North Korea has come under increased criticism and sanctions over the past year because of its nuclear weapons programme and repeated testing of conventional missiles.
t claims to have a fully deployable nuclear weapon, though there is still some international scepticism about its true capacity to carry out such an attack.

In his speech, Mr Kim re-emphasised his focus on the weapons programme, but implied the country still has a few stages left to go before achieving its ambitions. North Korea must “mass-produce nuclear warheads and ballistic missiles and speed up their deployment”, he said.

He also said they would not use their weapons unless they felt that peace was threatened.

Thawing relations with the South?

While his language against the US remained tough, Mr Kim did not employ his typically antagonistic tone when speaking about his neighbours in South Korea.
“The year 2018 is a significant year for both the North and the South, with the North marking the 70th anniversary of its birth and the South hosting the Winter Olympics.

“We should melt the frozen North-South relations, thus adorning this meaningful year as a year to be specially recorded in the history of the nation,” he said.
A spokesperson for the South Korean president said their office had “always stated our willingness to talk with North Korea at anytime and anywhere”.

“We hope the two Koreas will sit down and find a solution to lower tensions and establish peace on the Korean peninsula.”
Youngshik Daniel Bong, a research fellow at Yonsei Institute for North Korean Studies, told the BBC that addressing the South was a marked change from the norm for Mr Kim.

“North Korea usually ignores South Korea, maintaining the position that as a ‘nuclear power’ it will deal with the US on its own,” said Mr Bong. “It appears that by engaging the South, he hopes to create an estrangement between South Korea and the US.”

The analyst also said that Mr Kim could be seeking to improve ties to offer some respite from the growing economic pressures from the recent UN sanctions.

10 tips on how to kick-start your new year

10 tips

The people who achieve success are those who build momentum and keep it going all year round. In this article, Beauty and Tips shares 10 tips on how to kick-start your new year and live a more fulfilling and happy life. Below are the 10 tips:

Set Goals

Best way to kick start your new year? Set goals. It excites us, gives us direction and helps to ensure that we don’t waste a year doing the wrong things. Spend some time writing down the things you want to achieve this year and then work out how best to achieve them with a series of small goals.

Adopt An Affirmation

Affirmations are powerful things. The more we repeat something to ourselves, the more our brain starts to take it as fact. Our brains are super duper powerful, but they can be tricked into believing whatever we want them to believe. If you adopt a positive affirmation that you repeat out loud to yourself each day, your brain will absorb it until it becomes part of you. For example, from January 1, you could say to yourself each morning: “This year is going to be my year!” Repeat that powerful line over and over to yourself each day, and you will start to believe it. Even better, you’ll start to act on it.

Be Positive From The Start

This year is going to be your year. Keep telling yourself that and you’ll soon start to believe it. Accept that there’ll be failures and setbacks but remember that all setbacks can be overcome. Keep a positive attitude and you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve in twelve months.

Remove Stuff

Warren Buffet once said that we’re only as strong as our weakest link. In other words, bad habits hold us back and prevent us from being the best version of ourselves. For some people, alcohol holds them back. Instead of working on a business plan after work, they prefer to have a few beers. What held you back in 2017? We all have clutter in our life that we don’t need. This can be anything, from too much junk in the house that stresses us out, to lingering friendships that are adding no value to our life anymore. Remove things that are adding no value and streamline your life for more efficiency.

Write Down Your Values

Many of us don’t enjoy the perfect year because we don’t know what it is that we truly wanted. When the year comes to and end, we feel a tad unfulfilled. “My year was okay, but it could have been better,” we lament. The reason this is often so – is because we don’t know what our values are. Once you know your values, you start to make the right decisions that align with those values, you know what you want, and you do the things to get what you want.

Adopt A Healthy Diet

It’s a new year, which means a new you. And a big part of the new you should be a healthier diet that’s rich in fresh fruit and veg that fills you with energy and helps you stay on the ball. Make this the year you ditch the junk, the sugar and the bad fats. Be kinder to your body and reward it with a healthier diet. Remember, nutrients are important for protecting our immune system, giving us energy and reducing our risk of developing debilitating diseases. But nutrients also look after our mental health and can make us happier, while lowering depression and anxiety. Stock up on fruit, vegetables, grains and beans. Try exciting new dishes, make smoothies and enjoy all the wonderful organic food that’s out there.

Start Saying “No” to People

Bill Cosby once remarked that he couldn’t define a recipe for success, but that trying to please everyone all the time is the surest way to failure. It’s so true. When you become a people pleaser, your own goals get forgotten about. Sure, you’re making other people kinda happy, but where is your own life heading? Saying No to people is not mean, it’s being assertive and safeguarding your own success. Learn to set boundaries, stop trying to please people, and free up more time to work on yourself and your own goals.

Have A Social Media Detox

Facebook is now a massive rival to Google, so there’s no need to ditch it altogether because there’s so much great content and inspiring people on there. But if you spend too much time scrolling through your newsfeed, reading negative statuses and arguing over pointless things, it’s time to delete the negative people and start following more inspiring ones. Turn your Facebook into a force for good.

Read A Book

All successful people will tell you that they read lots of books. It’s because books a treasure trove of ideas and wisdom. They can literally change our lives. Whether you prefer fiction of non-fiction, books engage our brains, challenge our opinions, offer fresh perspectives on things and can show us the best way of solving problems. Buy a book in January and read at least ten pages per day.

Look To The Future

Lastly of the these 10 tips is , if you’ve set some goals and are having a hard time achieving them, look to the future. Picture what you want your life to look like at the end of 2018. Imagine how amazing you’ll feel if you stay on track.

Hope you find these 10 tips useful

Happy New Year and best wishes of love, happiness, health, prosperity and peace!
