Supreme Court dismisses Ayine application over Amidu case

0

An application by former deputy Attorney- General to improve his arguments against the presidential decision to select Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor has been dismissed.

The Supreme Court judge, Justice Gabriel Pwamang, sitting alone on the case threw out the application describing it as lacking merit.

This was after the state represented by Deputy Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame argued that court rules bars the opposition politician from doing so.

It is Dr. Ayine's case that Martin Amidu, 66 years, is unfit for the anti-corruption office because he is beyond the statutory age for holding a public office.

At the hearing of the two-month-old case, the Bolgatanga East MP Dr. Dominic Ayine had wanted to file additional arguments to support his writ.

But opposing counsel, Godfred Dame argued the request by the Standford-trained Doctor of Science of the Law is technically deficient.

Dr. Ayine may file an affidavit or additional evidence to his case but cannot amend the substantive writ he filed in February, it was argued.

He is also free to withdraw the case and file a fresh writ containing his improved arguments, a move which could restart the entire case.

The court dismissed his application to allow it hear the substantive matter of why he is convinced Ghana's first Special Prosecutor should be the last person to be considered for the powerful post.

Martin Amidu, a former deputy Attorney-General was in court to watch the spectacle and walked away telling journalists, he is focused on his work and is unperturbed by the legal challenge by one of his successors under the John Mills/John Mahama administration.

"I am doing my work", he shrugged off questions about how the case is affecting him.

Amidu's work is to line up officials, former and current, indicted for political corruption and prosecute them in a way that does not suggest political witch-hunt.

It is a role he has said, he is honoured to execute after similar feats he chalked singlehandedly in the 52m cedis Woyome judgment debt case.

Double: Exercise patience and wait for report – Kate Addo

0

The Acting Director of the Public Affairs Department of Parliament, Kate Addo, has asked the general public to be calm since measures are in place to probe alleged double salary claims involving  some Ministers who doubled as MPs in the Mahama administration.

There is an ongoing investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) into allegations of double salaries paid to some appointees under the erstwhile Mahama administration.

The claims have sparked public debate amid claims of political witch-hunting by members of the government since all the persons involved are members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive,  Kate Addo  said the offence of criminality in the said matter is yet to be proven and therefore implored  the Police, Members of Parliament and the general public to remain calm and circumspect in their comments until the facts of the matter are determined.

She reassured the general public that Parliament will cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies to bring the matter to a conclusion.

Former Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Inusah Fuseini, former Minister of State in charge of Social and Allied Institutions Comfort Doyoe Ghansah and former Brong Ahafo Region Minister Eric Opoku all under the John Mahama-led administration have been cited in the possible corruption scandal.

Swaziland King renames country 'The Kingdom of eSwatini'

0

Swaziland's King Mswati III has announced he is renaming the country as the Kingdom of eSwatini.

The monarch announced the official change at Golden Jubilee celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Swazi independence.

The celebrations also marked the king's 50th birthday. The southern African nation is an absolute monarchy.

The king, known as Ngwenyama or "the lion", is known for his many wives and for his adherence to traditional dress.

The new name, eSwatini, means "land of the Swazis".

Swaziland is a Commonwealth member.

The BBC's Nomsa Maseko in Swaziland says the announcement of the name change has angered some in the country, who believe the king should focus more on the nation's sluggish economy.

The country is Africa's last absolute monarchy, and in recent years demonstrators have called for a shift to democracy.

The son of Sobhuza II, who reigned for 82 years, King Mswati III currently has 15 wives. According to official biographers, his father took 125 wives during his reign.

While the official name change was unexpected, King Mswati III has been referring for years to Swaziland as the Kingdom of eSwatini.

This was the name the king used when he addressed the UN general assembly in 2017 and at the state opening of the country's parliament in 2014.

10 romantic things to do for your girlfriend

0

If you’re struggling to come up with some things to do with your partner, we’re here to help you out with 10 romantic things to do for your girlfriend. All you need to do is get your pen and notepad ready.

Write Her A Love Letter

This is one of the most romantic things to do for your girlfriend. You might think that letters are out of fashion now that we all use emails and texts to communicate. But because love letters still melt a girls’ heart, it’s time to get your pen and paper out.

A love letter is something special and meaningful, which is why girls love them so much. You can use this letter to communicate your deeper feelings, or you can simply write a quick note letting her know how much she means to you. You could also include a photograph of you both before mailing it off. She’ll treasure it forever.

Don’t forget to smother it in kiss and love hearts. Yes, we love that stuff.

Plan A Surprise

You should know by now that girls LOVE surprises. But even if you know this, you possibly haven’t made much of an effort to surprise your girlfriend very often.

Cast any issues about money aside, and splash out on something you know she will love. This could be anything from a bottle of wine after work to a weekend away somewhere together. It could even be a gesture, such as breakfast in bed.

Get In The Bath Together

Showers are sexual, but bathtubs are sensual. Getting in a warm, bubbly bath together with a glass of champagne is a perfect way to spend the evening. Have some light music playing in the background and a few candles dotted around the room and you’re onto a winner.

If you really want to push the boat out, hire a hotel for the night and order room service too. You won’t just be soaking up the water – you’ll be soaking up the love, too. Get on it.

Have A Rooftop Dinner

In the movies and on television, romantic dinners rarely go right. Either a gust of wind blows the picnic away, or a huge bird comes along and pecks someone’s head. At least it creates a memory, right?

But a rooftop dinner is incredibly romantic, no matter what happens. If you can’t get hold of a roof (and it isn’t easy!), you could use your back garden instead. Whatever you use, make sure that it’s somewhere secluded where no one can disturb you. This is for just you and your girlfriend.

Cook For Her

Another one of fabulous, romantic things to do for your girlfriend is to simply cook for her. If you haven’t cooked for your girlfriend for quite a while, it’s time to put your apron on and get into the kitchen.

Your girlfriend might be tired of cooking, and she might be stressed out from working hard. To ease the pressure on her, you should come up with a delicious recipe that brightens her day. After all, we all love being cooked for!

Just try not to set the kitchen on fire. Heroically rescuing her from flames could be romantic, but we’d rather prefer things didn’t get to this stage.

Have A Phone Call Before Bed

If you don’t live with your girlfriend, she’ll totally appreciate it and love you forever if you ring just before bed. Find out what time she usually hits the hay and give her a call. It’s thoughtful, affectionate, it shows that you care about her and it’s one of the simplest romantic things to do for your girlfriend.

Moreover, it reassures her of your love just before she says goodnight to the world once more. And if she has any worries and fears, she can tell you about them.

Give Her Your Jacket

No, we’re not talking about the chivalrous act of making sure your girlfriend is nice and warm; instead, we’re suggesting that you wear that suit she loves before giving her the jacket.

Basically, this is akin to foreplay. It’s romantic, but it’s also sensual and suggestive. It will get her in the mood.

Make Something Together

It’s one thing making her a gift on your own, and another, more romantic thing if you make something together. Teamwork between couples is hugely romantic. Not only do you get a sense of achievement at having made something, but you also bond during the process of making it.

In the film Ghost, husband and wife make a clay pot together in one of the most sensual scenes in the movies ever. They kiss and touch each other while making the pot, and basically get closer.

Pick something you both like and work on it together.

Hold Hands In Public

Holding hands in public is something that is so simple, yet many long-term couples often forget to do it. Holding hands is a sign that your love is still strong, and doing it in public shows the world that you two are strong together.

Going for a stroll in the park is incredibly romantic. Walking arm in arm brings you both together and shows that are you One against the rest.

Make Sacrifices

And finally, one of simple and romantic things to do for your girlfriend is to make sacrifices for her. Sacrificing something for another person is incredibly hard to do, which is why sacrificing something for your girlfriend is incredibly romantic. She should do the same too. If there is something about her or her way of life that you disagree with, ask her to forsake it for you and your love. You will agree to do the same. This can help to clear the air and lift tension, and you can move forward together happily.

Debts owed waste service providers a major cause of Ghana’s waste challenge-ESPA president

0

Ghana’s waste management challenge has been attributed to Government’s inability to pay huge debts owed sector players to enable them deliver their mandate in ensuring that waste is collected and managed effectively.

The President of the Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA), Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong who made this revelation at an annual general meeting of the association held in Accra, disclosed that the various waste management companies despite their capacity are unable to deliver because accrued debts owed them have not been paid.

The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo in his state of the nation address admitted that government owes various service providers in the sanitation sector and admonished that, plans are far advanced to offset those debts.

Dr. Agyepong disclosed that, members of ESPA have to depend on loan facilities from banks with consequential high interest rates before they can operate. “Indeed majority of us also depend on overdraft facilities for our operations with its consequential high interest rates”, he lamented.

The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Mr. Joseph Kofi Adda who spoke as a special guest at the event admitted that government owes service providers and efforts are been made to pay those debts to enable them deliver on their mandate.

He commended ESPA for the various research and academic engagements it has undertaken to help conduct adequate research in the waste management sector and help develop innovations that will bring lasting solutions to Ghana’s waste problem.

The Environmental Services Providers Association is an umbrella body of private waste companies handling waste of various categories for Metropolitan/Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAS), in a Public Private Partnership (PPP) agreement.

The Second Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the association was on the theme “Sustainable capitalization as a driving tool to improve sanitation in the sector”.

Mills' GH¢ 2 m cash was used for research – Obour

0

President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bice Osei Kuffour, better known as Obour, has denied accusations that the union could not account for some GH¢ 2 million allocated to it.

The Chairman of the Public Accountability Committee (PIAC), Dr. Steve Manteaw accused MUSIGA of failing to present a report on a research it conducted on the  GH¢ 2 million fund the Mills’ administration allocated to them in 2012.

In an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Bice Osei Kuffour explained that the GH¢ 2 million was used to conduct a comprehensive research into the Ghana Music industry.

According to him, prior to the research, the Union did not have a complete data of the country’s music industry. He added that aside  the research revealing an 8% contribution by MUSIGA to the country’s GDP, it also gave the union a comprehensive data on people actively involved in the Music industry.

Bice Osei Kuffour explained that foreign investors who are interested in supporting the music industry usually request for the data which was previously not available.

“The document obtained after the research is a very useful document and if PIAC had written to the union and demanded evidence, I am sure their reportage would have been different,” he added.

He entreated all to visit MUSIGA offices as well as the Union’s website for copies of the research.

Man grabbed after  allegedly absconding with six vehicles from Toyota

0

The Managing Director of Ghana Chemical Company has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly defrauding Toyota Ghana Limited of an amount of $205,862.

Jacob Mawuli Setsofe purchased six vehicles for a science related project.

However, after making a deposit of 5,000 dollars for the vehicles Setsofe declined to pay the rest of the money and went into hiding.

Setsofe, charged with fictitious trading, forgery of documents, possession of forged documents and issuing false cheque.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and the court presided over by Mrs Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku admitted him to bail in the sum of GH¢2 million with five sureties, two of whom to be justified.

He is expected to reappear on May 3.

Mr Thomas Aubyin, defence counsel for Setsofe said the accused had no intentions of defrauding the company and that he was into a genuine business.

According to Mr Aubyin, Setsofe was embarking on a science project but the demise of Professor Evans John Atta-Mills truncated this project.

Defence counsel had earlier prayed the court to admit his client to bail because he would appear to stand trial.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Martin Adu Acheampong said the complainant, Mr Edwin Kofi Sarfo, is an accountant with Toyota Ghana Limited.

On April 4, 2015, Setsofe approached Toyota Ghana Limited to purchase six vehicles. The vehicles were made up of three Hilux DLZ, one Hilux ALT and two Toyota Yaris.

Prosecution said, Setsofe paid 5,000 dollars as part payment and promised to pay the rest by instalments within six months, adding that he would be issuing cheques for the payment.

Prosecution said the accused person told the company that he was going to use the six vehicles to distribute alcohol.

According to prosecution the company released a way bill, DVLA sticker and left change of ownership column on the documents blank.

The accused person, however, wrote his name on the change of ownership and stamped same with his office stamp.

Prosecution said the accused person gave the vehicles to witnesses in the matter to sell same and pocketed the proceeds.

Setsofe issued six different cheques and when they were presented at the bank they were dishonoured.

After fruitless efforts of contacting him, a warrant of arrest was sought and he was published in the national dailies.

Prosecution said Setsofe, who was involved in another matter in Tema, was transferred to Accra and that so far two of the cars all being  Toyota Yaris have been retrieved, prosecution added.

Zimbabwe's ex-army chief fires 15,000 nurses

Zimbabwe’s former army chief Constantino Chiwenga has fired more than 15,000 nurses who went on strike to demand better wages.

Mr Chiwenga led the military takeover last November that resulted in the overthrow of President Robert Mugabe – and is now vice-president.

In a statement, he said money had been released to the health ministry to pay outstanding allowances to the striking nurse on Monday, but they had not returned to work.

While this demonstrates good faith in the part of government, the prompt transfers which have been effected against demonstrable economic challenges facing the country, has not quite surprisingly persuaded the striking nurses to go back to their stations in the interest of saving lives and helping helpless patients under their care.

The government now regards this lack of remorse as politically motivated and thus as going beyond concerns of conditions of service and worker welfare.”

The decision to fire them had been taken "in the interest of patients and of saving lives", the vice-president said.

According to Zimbabwe's Independent Online new site, this strike comes after the government gave in to doctors’ demands and increased their salaries and allowances following a month-long strike that had crippled the health sector.
