NDC will only get 33% if elections were held today- Legon Survey

0

Only 33.1% of Ghanaians would vote for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) if elections were held last year according to a survey conducted by the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana.

The ruling NPP on the hand, will get 52.7% if elections were held around the same time.

The survey also settled on President John Mahama as the preferred candidate for the NDC in 2020.

The survey was conducted in 250 electoral areas across the country with 50000 respondents

Speaking to media  Wednesday,  head of the Political Science department of the University of Ghana, Dr Bossman Asare disclosed that  5000 respondents were sampled in ten regions.

He further said  250 electoral areas  were selected  with 18  NDC dominated constituencies and 14 NDC.

He explained that  some of the respondents voted for the NPP due to  the introduction of some critical social policies like the Free SHS, restoration of  trainee allowances and the fight against galamsey.

“We can see that once government is working and getting things done citizens also appreciate. But of all these… the most popularly policy has to do with the Free Senior High School,” said Dr. Bossman Asare, Head Political Science Department, University of Ghana.

“Many voters indicated that they thought it was a very…very good thing and really identified with it,” he added.

We never promised 21% reduction in electricity tariffs – Energy Ministry

0

The Energy Ministry has denied rumours that the ministry promised a 21% reduction in electricity tariffs.

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) Ghana announced in a statement prices of fuel had been hiked by 4%.

According to the statement, fuel prices that used to trade at Ghc4.490/litre for both petrol and diesel have seen an increase to 4.670 a difference of about 18p or some 4.008% increases, price per gallon per the new increases is now Ghc21.015 from the previous Ghc20.20 for both products.

However, speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive Wednesday, Communication Director at the Ministry of Energy, Nana Kofi Oppong Damoah debunked the rumour and urged the Minority  in Parliament to desist from spreading lies.

According to him, no section of the budget stipulated that electricity tariffs would be reduced by 21%. He added that the budget only made mention of a new electricity pricing which stipulated a 13% reduction in average households among others.

He  explained that if the Minority seeks to engage the general public then they should do it with much credibility.

Agogo: Permanent solution to Fulani crises underway – MP

0

Asante-Akim North Member of Parliament (MP), Andy Appiah-Kubi,  says  the authorities are working hard to find a permanent solution to the Fulani menace in the area.

Three military officers and a policeman were shot after an exchange of fire with Fulani herdsmen at Serebuoso in Agogo in the Ashanti Region.

According to reports, they were shot from behind after responding to a distress call from a woman that her farm was being destroyed by herd of cattle. The three military officers and the policeman are members of the Operation Cowleg.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Asante-Akim North MP, Andy Appiah-Kubi stated that Fulani issue has been persistent and needs to be tackled once and for all.

According to him, there is an anti-grazing Bill ready to be presented to Parliament for approval. The Bill, which according to him, is the solution to Fulani crises, will curb among other things the indiscriminate transportation of cattle by the Fulani Herdsmen.

“The bill will take care of the destruction of properties and life by the nomadic herdsmen and their cattle,” he added.

The MP in an interview earlier accused the herdsmen of trying to bribe him with a sum of GHS100, 000  to overlook the extreme grazing of cattle which has led to the security crisis in Agogo.

Man dies during sexual intercourse

0

A 31-year-old man is alleged to have died while having sex with his lover in her house at John Tei, near Accra.

The deceased, identified by the police as Divine Kwame Avortri, worked in the pharmacy department of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission Hospital in Accra.

His girlfriend, whose name had been withheld by the police, is assisting the police with their investigations.

Visit

According to the police, Avortri visited his lover last Sunday and the two of them engaged in a bout of sex.

While in the act, Avortri is said to have complained of severe headache but before the two could find a solution, he had collapsed.

With the help of some neighbours, he was taken to the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission Hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The incident was subsequently reported to the police and a team of police personnel was dispatched to the house of the girlfriend.

Search

During a search in the house, the police found a bag which the girlfriend claimed belonged to the deceased.

They found some medications, including some tablets and capsules, two mobile phones and cash of GH¢160 in the bag.

It was also suspected that he took four of the capsules believed to be painkillers.

When the Police Administration was contacted, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mrs Effia Tenge, confirmed the incident.

However, she said, the police could not attribute the cause of death to the sexual intercourse between Divine Avortri and his lover.

She indicated that they could only confirm the cause of death after an autopsy had been carried out.

The body of the deceased had since been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue, in Accra.

2017 Christmas was the worst in 44 years – Baba Jamal

0

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region, Alhaji Baba Jamal, has asserted that last year’s Christmas was the worst in 44 years.

The MP attributed the worst Christmas to the bad economic policies supervised by President Akufo -Addo.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s “Ghana Nie” morning show hosted by Bismark Brown Wednesday, the former Deputy Employment and Labour Relations Minister said most Ghanaians didn’t feel the Christmas fever unlike "some NPP big men".

He added that prices of foodstuffs sky-rocketed during the occasion, making it difficult for Ghanaians to enjoy the holidays.

Baba Jamal lamented that radio and TV stations failed to play Christmas carols because of the economic hardship under the NPP.

In a sharp rebuttal, former MP for Ablekuma North, Justice Joe Appiah Appiah, rejected the claim. He said last year’s Christmas was a memorable one, adding that prices of general goods and services were relatively low.

Kufuor praises Kwame Despite, Siaw Agyapong, others for being successful entrepreneurs

0

Former President Kufuor has encouraged youth in the country to emulate the entrepreneurial spirits of Kwame Despite, owner of Peace FM and Joseph Siaw Agyapong, the man behind Zoomlion to reduce the escalating unemployment.

The Former President intimated that these individuals have excelled in their various fields and created wealth and employment which has given opportunity to hundreds of people.

He was emphatic that it was time the youth took their destinies into their hands and acted smart by identifying solutions to the various challenges faced in the country.

This he believed will not only serve as a source of employment but also as a means of creating wealth which will reduce the poverty levels in the country.

“We needn’t go far to the developed world to see where some youth have shown leadership and broken through the moulds. Look at Nigeria now we hear of Dangote. Dangote started when he was a youth, In a way like many of you here perhaps even younger in his 20s and 30s. I don’t think he’s more than 60, now he’s listed among the 20 richest people in the world creating many jobs for people not only in Nigeria but he’s in Ghana and Senegal. He’s everywhere” he noted.
“Even here in Ghana, the list is very exhaustive. Every day you turn unto Peace FM and you hear of Dr. Osei Kwame Despite and his brother, Ofori Sarpong. See the industries they are creating, the employment. They own Special Ice mineral water, This Way Chocolate Drink, Neat Fufu. With all due respect, I don’t think it is their book so much as it is their smartness.

"Similarly, Zoomlion started around and seeing that there is so much filth around us. Earlier times we depended on the local government Authorities, unfortunately, the workers come around and just work superficially but they were not regular but this man comes around, organises, employs a lot of people and it is now a household name” he remarked.

Former President Kufuor was of the view that many people misconstrue the role of the government in development and wealth creation

He insisted that it’s not government’s responsibility to do business but its focus should be on creating the right atmosphere for the private sector to thrive.

He said “What I want to say to the youth of Ghana is that you must believe in yourself that you can do it. Unfortunately, it looks like we have been weaned as a society with everyone looking up to government. If we want to go that way, im afraid it will take umpteen years before we get there. Government is there alright but government is to govern, government is not to do business. This is why when I got the opportunity to lead the government of Ghana I decided we form a Ministry to lead the private sector development.

"We wanted our society to appreciate that the private sector can only be an infrastructure for the public sector, prepare the grounds, set the framework so the citizenry, the individuals will take up the challenge of doing things for themselves.”

Mr. Kufuor gave these remarks in a short ceremony at his residence in Accra when he was called upon to be a patron to an initiative that is intended to nurture and facilitate access to funds and exposure for young entrepreneurs and graduates.

The initiative dubbed “Ghana Job Bank” will assist graduates to develop their business ideas and also give them hands-on training with partner firms in India, Middle East and America.

Accepting the honour to be the patron Former President Kufuor expressed satisfaction at the idea and hoped that many people will benefit from the initiative and also create wealth that will help develop the country.

In attendance at the ceremony were the Education Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Deputy Communications Minister George Andah, NSS Executive Director, Ussif Mustapha and Entertainment personalities such as Musician Sarkodie and TV personality Joyceline Dumas.
